Urana Lawn Tennis Club Tournament. [Newspaper Article] — Jerilderie Herald and Urana Advertiser — 21 October 1898

ttJrana ? Xiiwai Tennis OjiSj The annual tournament of the. local Lawn Tennis Club was held on Friday and Satur day last. Owing to the trying drought we are passing through, tho attendance was not so large as on former occasions j but all the lovers of the pa me in the town, and from many stations in the vicinity were present, and expressed themselves well pleased with tho play. Two representatives of Naran dera, Messrs. Miller and Stevenson, took part ill the events, and put down our local knights of tho racquet, the latter (Mr. Stevenson) carrying off the championship. The weather up to 4 o'clock on Friday was unsuitable, owing to a heavy gale blowing, and play was delayed until late in the after noon. Saturday was calm and pleasant, and though the players complained of the heat, the onlookers found no reason to grumble. The club may consider themselves extremely fortunate in getting clear of such days ns Thursday and Sunday, the one just before and the other just after their tour...

Lochhart. October 17. [Newspaper Article] — Jerilderie Herald and Urana Advertiser — 21 October 1898

locldiart, October 17. Owing to the continued dry weather the crops in this district will be almost a total failure. During the past month people have been hoping that rain would fall in time to sare the crops, but they are now bovond re demption. On all sides one sees withered paddocks, and it is questionable whether enough hay will be gathered to put in next year's crop. Several farmers have already bought seed for next sowing. The failure of the harvest will be sevorely felt, and will re tard the progress of our town which has been ? been making rapid strides during the past year. Tho picnic of the combined public schools takes place on the 21s inst., and promises to be a great success, notwithstanding the dry B«ason. Some £20 has been collected for prizes, &c., a very liberal programme has been provided, and the ladies are busy mak ing preparations for the event. A concert will be held in tho hall at night in aid of the Mutual Improvement Society. A cricket match was pla...

Daysdale. October 18. [Newspaper Article] — Jerilderie Herald and Urana Advertiser — 21 October 1898

Aaysdale. October 18. Tne weatner is still Keeping very ary, ana a gloomy outlook presents itself to the farmers and others in this district. I am informed that some of the crops are already past recovery, and it is hard to say what we shall do about the township for water during the coming summer as there is very little in the Government tank and those persons who are lucky enough to have a little water con served for their own use will not be able to spare much for others. Still people do not seem to worry ; a meeting which was to be held here yesterday to discuss the water question lapsed as only two or three persons put in an appearance. Goonambilshed cut out last Thursday, bat made no appreciable difference to the town ship, most of the shearers and others going straight through. On Monday the 10th inst. a social was held in the School of Arts to bid good-bye to Mr. W, S. Gentle, postmaster, and Mr. and Mrs. Hogan, who have for the last ten years kept the Exchange Hotel. Mr. Jo...

A S«are TBsing'. , , THAT'S WHAT WE'RE ALL AFTER.— MANY THE ONE THAT AVILL FIND IN THESE WORDS WHAT THEY HAVE LOOKED FOR, Do you know rwhat it is to have a back that is never free from aches and constant pain — a lame back, a sore back, an aching back, in fact a back that makes your life a burden? ? What, have you done for it? And does it still keep you from the happiness which health brings to all? We know full well if such is your condition that you are looking' for a sure thing, something that will relieve the pain, remove the cause, and restore the system to the condition designed by nature. Mr. William Reed lives in Lachlan St. Hay, the oldest inhabitant save one of Hay. He carries on the business of a fruiterer and fishmonger, His testimony is as follows : — ' For many years I have been troubled by a severe pain in the small of my back in tho region of the kidneys; I felt it at night when resting after a day's work. The suf fering I would experience upon arising would be acute...

DISTRICT NEWS. [From Our Own Correspondents.] Conarg-o. October 11. Our anxistics regarding the water and the wagering which creek would reach ub fir3t was set at rest yesterday week by the water in the Billabong reaching us. It has now passed Boonoko Station and is still running strongly over the Quiamongdnm ftt Conargo. The water in the Yanko did not pass through the Yanko holding, and is still many miles to the nor'-east of us. We have abandoned all hope of that stream reaching us this Beason. There is a rumor afloat here that the waters of the Billabong proper were diverted soma miles east of the junction a week of so before the Colombo water reached there. I hear that a man was sent up to see if the rumor were correct. He has returned but I have not heard his report. If correct, there is probably more litigation ahead. Anxiety is felt by the landowners on the creek to the west of us at the news that your Council is going to stop the stream flowing past .Terilderie, but it is ho...
