AGRICULTURAL NOTES. [Newspaper Article] — Kerang Times and Swan Hill Gazette — 6 September 1878

AGRICULTURAL NOTES. The cold weather and heavy frosts at night.have apparently passed away for the season, and the genial heat of the sun now,. with the fine weather that has set in, will ensure the rapid growth of the crops. Everywhere in the Sandhurst district there is promise of a good and plentiful harvest, and the breadth of ground under cereals is greater than in any former year. The early crops are especially luxuriant for the season, and though in some localities there are slight rumors of blight or rust, and of the late crops making little progress, on the whole, farmers here this season have reason to bb well satisfied. Grass feed, too, is plentiful, and stock generally are in ex cellent condition. In some portions of the Echuca district we hear rather unfavorable reports of the wheat crop. At Broken Creek, too, what seems to be the rose blight,or perhaps rust, has been noticed in crops a foot high. The stalks, especially near the ground, show marks of blight, and the leave...

PARLIAMENT. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST S1th. In the Aesenibly leavewas moved for,by Sir Bryan O'Loghlen, to bring in a bill to permit liens to be given on growing crops. The bill was eventually read a first time and the second reading was fixed for the following Wednesday. Mr O'Hea then resumed the debate up on the second reading of the Reform Bill, and in a long and able speech strongly ad vocated the passing of the measure. The bill was opposed by Mlr A. K. Smith, who stated that the plebisciftum would never settle any question, as the apathy of the people would prevent the unanimous opinion of the country being taken. Mr Brophy then spoke in support of the mea sure, and stated that the Opposition to the bill was a blind, put forward to rob the people of representative government. The measure was also supported by Mr Sar geanit. Mr B. II. Cameron regretted that he could not vote in support of the measure as it would in his opinion give the Govern ument tooSImciipower.
