SYDNEY FROM AN AEROPLANE. A Unique View of the Premier City, Showing its Aggregation of Fine Buildings. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 9 June 1914

SYDNEY FROM AN AEROPLANE. A Unique View of the Premier City, Showing its Aggregation of Fine Buildings. Perhaps no more unique view of Sydney than this has been presented. It gives a clear definition of the various thoroughfares and the great buildings, the majority of which are easily distinguished. The peacefulness of the clouds is in the photograph, and it is not the traffic-throbbing Sydney as we know it. Aeroplane-photographs are now the vogue, because of their uniqueness for one thing, but more importantly because of their value for reconnaissance purposes in war time. With the advent of the aeroplane the photographic lens has actually become a factor in warfare.

A BUSY OFFICER. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 9 June 1914

A BUSY OFFICER. We don't know the name of Wingadee's (N.S.W.) clerk, but he is a grafter even if he happens to possess the easy-going name of Smith. Some rea sons why : — The outward correspondence during the year reached a total of over 3600 letters, etc., and more than that number was received, perused and filed. The number of resolutions recorded in me mi nine dook during tne year totalled -I.™, cover ing LSI pages of closely written books. The auditor in his last report stated that the books were 'ex- ceedingly well kept.' Of course the town clerk was not without able assistance, but as the officer in charge he deserves the big share of the credit.

THE MARINE ENGINEER. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 9 June 1914

THE MARINE ENGINEER. President Denny, of the Institute of Marine Engi neers, London, dwelt upon some characteristics of the marine engineer. He said: — 'The advances that have been made in marine engineering, will undoubtedly compare with the changes and ad vances made by any other industry in the country. By the advances in marine engineering and the com pletion of the Suez Canal, which these advances made possible and profitable, the face of the globe has for all practical purposes, been altered; facili ties for travel have been indefinitely extended, and the tendency of this must — however far off — be in the direction of annihilating national misunder standings, and welding the human race into one homogeneous whole, when there shall be 'Neither Jew nor Greek nor bond nor free.' Thanks to the marine engineer, national isolation is no longer possible. While this is only a tendency meantime, leading unfortunately to cases of racial outbreaks and antipathies, in the end this tendenc...

FUTURE DIMENSIONS OF SHIPS. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 9 June 1914

FUTURE DIMENSIONS OF SHIPS. Mr. J. Foster King, the chief surveyor to the British Corporation for the Survey and Registry of Shipping, has written an interesting paper on 'The probable dimensions of sea-going vessels of the ' future in relation to the dimensions to be given to maritime canals,' \Vhich was read before the Inter national Maritime Congress, held at Philadelphia. In dealing with the different vessels, Mr. King left out of consideration the Great Eastern, which was at least fifty years before her time. As regards passenger steamers, between 183-7 and 1S97, their length increased at the rate of 6(5 feet in ten years, and since 1897 at the rate of a little over 150ft. in ten years. The length of cargo steamers has doubled in GO years. In breadth the broadest ships built between 1843 and 1862 remained practically constant at a mean breadth of -19ft., and between J864 and 187!) the broadest ships were built at an average breadth of only 44ft., although the length was constan...

THE SALVATION OF A SHIP. The Empress of Ireland Disaster. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 9 June 1914

THE SALVATION OF A SHIP. The Empress of Ireland Disaster. The recent sea tragedy involving the loss of the steamer. 'Empress of Ireland' lends additional inter est to an article written at the time of the Titanic disaster, by F. W. Fitzpatrickj the imminent Ameri can Architect. He wrote: — We who build on land have learned some things from the naval architects, and it is barely possible that they could learn a twist or two from us. The salvation of our buildings— from fire— lies in fire-resisting construction and small units of space where fire may originate; the salvation of a ship lies in making it fire and waterproof and cutting it up into as many water-tight compartments as possible. Collision bulkheads, false keels and midship com partments are well enough, but not sufficient. The coal-bunkers, the trunk-hold, the supply compart ments, any space about a ship that can be made water-tight should be so and have only emergency openings thereto and that can be closed from the bridge...
