GROW YOUR OWN TOBACCO. [COMMUNICATED.] [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 14 August 1896

GKOW YOUR OWN TOBACCO. [communicated.] way not V Now is the time to com mence operations, and the Central Agricultural Bureau having forwarded • seed of the leading varieties to the local Branch, a small quantity suffi cient for experimental purposes may be obtained on application to Mr. W. Waters, the local honorary secretary. More than one Benmark settler has succeeded in growing and curing tobacco of good quality, and while it' yet remains to be proved whether to bacco growing on a large scale can be profitably carried on inihis locality, . there, is no reason why every smoker in the settlement should not grow enough for his own use. The only real difficulty is in the early stage. The seed being exceedingly small must be sown in carefully prepared soil consisting of rich loam mixed with wood ashes. The best method (on a small scale) is to place the prepared soil in a box which should l?e filled up to about three inches from the top. The soil should be well watered and allowed to ...

The Pioneer, FRIDAY, AUGUST 14, 1896. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 14 August 1896

Cljc Eiouecr, FRIDAY, AUGUST 14. 1896, The unsatisfactory condition hang of the affairs of this settle on 1 nieut and the uncertainty of what tnav be the intentions of the succcssora to Chaffey Bros., Ltd., the debenture holders, are no doubt disheartening. It is time the irrigation works were attended to and a couple of Weeks more delay will make the repairs more difficult and more costly to effect. After the irri gation now proceeding is over the Trust should be in a position to put the work in hand, but the borrowing Bill is not yet passed as the Select Committee have only just reported to the House of Assembly. The deferring of their hopes on both those matters, the settlers complain, "mak<4h the heart sick," as saiih Liie psaluiist. There is yet time however to complete the repairs before the later spring irri gation provided the preliminaries are settled forthwith, and this being done the next watering, or more probably the que following, will bis carried out with g...
