Daring Safe Robbery. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Tweed Advertiser — 17 April 1903

Waring Safe Etobberj. O.VK of the most daring safe rob beries ever perpetrated in Goulburn, and having a somewhat extraordinary development, was committed early on Sunday morning, when the safe in A. H. Line's bakehouse, Bradley-street, was carried bodily away between o aiid 4 o'clock iu the morning, taken j some distance, aud blown open with dvnamite. A wheelbarrow, found on the pre mises,. wns used to convey the safe, which was taken to the railway line, pushed up the embankment, and thrown over 15ft. on to the other side, where there are few houses. Several men must have beeu engaged to do this work. They were evidently novices in safe-breaking, and the use of dynamite, as they put in a charge which completely blew the safe to 'pieces, and destroyed the greater part of the money. The force of the explosion sent- the ledger 30ft. away into a pool of water, and utterly destroyed it. A,bout £0. were in the safe, consisting of two notes, one sovereign, silver, aud coppers. When the p...

Prison Riot in Russia. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Tweed Advertiser — 17 April 1903

l*riM»n Etiot in Btussiu. A sekious riot, which had apparently lonpr lipen prepared, occurred' among the prisoners in IheOdesRn gnol lntelv. At a given signal, when dinner wiis being served, ihe prisoners, who num bered GOO, began bnttering in the doors of I heir cells, .smashing the windows, and breaking up the furni ture. After liberating those prisoners who were still contined in their cells the rioters proceeded to barricade tin corridors with their bedding and the broken furnitnre. As all attempts to put an end to ilin disturbance by friendly persuasion proved fruitless, the prison guard made use of their arms, with the result that one rioter was killed, and another wounded. In consequence of the threatening character of Ihe revolt, the governor of the prison closed all the exits of tbs building, and the ae.ting prefect of the town had the interior of the prison occupied by t wo companions of sol diers.
