'READY FOR WELDING Union Bank Building, Castlereagh St., Sydney This photograph shows a steel stanchion bolted up ready for welding on the Union Bank ?.if Australia in- Castlereagh Street. Note the plate welded to the upper portion of the stanchion overlapping the bottom portion, which projects through the concrete floor. These stanchions are made up of angles and are filled with concrete, the cross beams being of reinforced concrete. This is the first all electrically arc welded city building to be erect ed in Sydney and the largest building of this nature to be erected in Australia. An article on the building appears in the October issue of 'Building.'

Hughes and Co., Master Builders The above photographs show two stanchions being electrically welded upon the Union Bank in Castlereagh Street, Sydney, the welders being the Pioneer Welding Co. The picture on the right shows the stanchions being welded prior to the removal of the bolts which hold the stanchion in position immediately after erection. As can be. clearly seen in the picture 011 the left the electrode is placed in . a gun through which current is transmitted and when con tact is made with the steel stanchion the electrode and column are fused and foi*m the weld. The heat generated al the arc is 7300 deg. centigrade.
