THE COMING COMET. (From the Saturday Review.) [Newspaper Article] — Rockhampton Bulletin — 9 May 1872

THE OOHING COMET. (From (he Saturday Beriew.} NEETOUS people, as is credibly stated, bave been put to great anxiety by the aanouncement, which recently appeared ip the papers, that a distinguished astronomer had discovered a monstrous comet rushing straight towards -tts with amazing rapidity from the remoteabysses of space, and yet pursuing its course with as little tendency to deviation as though it were running upon rails. Some friendly planet might by possi- bility put forth a helping hand, and twist the approaching monster from its course, as the hero of a novel diverts the runaway steed just as it is about to crush the heroine. Good-natured astronomers have taken pains to explain that there is no comet coming ; that, if it were coming, it would be a very welcome visitor ;., and that we have already passed through a comet, and found if less obnoxious than a°31ondon fog. The astronomers mean well, but they are terribly prosaic people. They ought surely to understand that they are...

WOMEN'S DRESS. [Newspaper Article] — Rockhampton Bulletin — 11 May 1872

WOM.if.N'3 DRESS. TUB question of mo regulation of ¡ women's dress is occupying nt present n good deni of .addition in more qunrlere j limn one. Many women ore feeling tlint il is high timo something was done to modify thc excesses and the extrava- i gonces into which femólo costume has ; run ; nnd at the sarao timo they hardly know how to begin to work. Besides, women as a rule have a detestation of singularity, and, in order to ovoid oven the appearance of, that many of them aro led into au outward acquiescence with fashions, of thc folly of which they are inwardly persuaded. Tho institution of such an association as the Women's Dre*s Association may help some ladies who by themselves would hardly have courage to say that they refused to adopt any new extrava- gance of costume. Thc association propagates no Quixotic ideas as to adopting a sameness of dress, and desires as much to avoid that singularity of dress which results from being wholly out of thc fashion as that which is th...
