TUMUT. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 26 December 1868

? TUMUT. ObOH OtTB COBBMPONDENT.) Deoeubeb 24th. — We are again having a spell of genuine summer weather. On Mon day last we had a smoking hot wind, a regular furnace blast, while the clouds of dust that whirled through our streets imparted to the heated atmosphere a dull hazy hue. On the following day I observed a dense cloud of smoke towering above the Blowering range, proceeding, I understand, from a bush fire which has swept the whole of Bowler's forest. Some of the travelling shepherds are blamed for the conflagration. Our farmers are hurrying in the wheat crops, to prevent loss of grain by shelling, out in places where the wheat is over-ripe and will hardly bear handling. The greater portion of the reaping will, I imagine, be over before Christmas. It is thought the yield of many crops will be short of previous expectations, as much grain is shrivelled np with the great heat and hot winds. The Vine disease, ' Oidium Tuckerii,' has not yet made its appearance in our neighbour h...

KIANDRA. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 26 December 1868

? kiandsa. (from oto corbbsfohdsht.) December 22nd. — Sheep and cattle are arriv ing in multitudes in our region ; about 60,000 of the former and 1200 of the latter, I think. Well, there is plenty of room for all, the grass is magnificent, and this country capable of feeding thousands on thousands of stock. Mr. Bluett, of Wagga Wagga, was up here looking at Happy Jack's Plains, but I under stand they are already occupied, Mr. Cosgrpve of Billilingna being them with sheep. Of course those first in possession of these un occupied runs will hold them good against all comers. Mining matters siro almost at a standstill In tbe Three-mile tunnel they have got very hard rock to work, which they have to blast ; but at the Charcoal reef the prospectors are going a-head, having at last overcome the water. A nice specimen was obtained lost week by Goulstone and party, on Jackass flat, which gave when crushed some 10 ozs of gold, and one was also got in the Homeward Bound claim, New Chum hill, w...

NEWS OF THE WEEK. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 26 December 1868

NEWS OF THE WEEK. The Rev. D. P. M. Hulberfc has been making a pastoral tour round portion of this district. He started on the evening of Tues day, the 15th inst., visited several farms, held service at Mrs. Booking's homestead next day, and a morning service at Mr. Whitticker's farm on the Thursday. The rev. gentleman then proceeded to Mr. Horsley's station, at Yabtree, to hold evening service. We have not of latd visited this locality, but we learn that such have been the judicious im provements the present occupant has effected that if any of the Hillas family were now to revisit Yabtree they would hardly know the .place again. Mr. Hulbert christened some infant3, and was gratified to hear that the elder children of several families in that locality went regularly to receive religious instruction at Mrs. Windeyer's Sunday-school. Twenty seven persona assembled at Mr. Wbit ticker's for divine service, and we understand that upwards of sixty people have been bene fited by this past...
