Editorial [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 14 November 1985

Editorial Howdy Capitol Campus! The Capitol Times has a new editor. I am not a native Pennsylvanian, so the paper may fake on a spicy Southern twist. From now on we will publish all the Dallas Cowboy football statistics and we have a television reviewer who will keep everyone up on the latest developments of "Dallas" and the Ewings. I hope ya'll enjoy the attitude of the Capitol Times. We are fixin' to do great new things, like introduce a mascot, add new features and trivia- why, we are just bustin' at the seams with excitment! I do have a problem "bigger than Dallas" though. Since I am not from over yonder, I need help to make the Capitol Times a paper ya'll will read and enjoy. I dare you engineers, business types and humanists to give me a hand. If I am to make the Capitol Times a Texas-size success, I will need to pick a few brains. Challange me! Write to us, ask questions, criticize or compliment the Capitol Times. Go ahead, true Southern belles, like myself, can handle ...

How to impress your family with your college education [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 14 November 1985

How to impress your family with your college education Consider This.... "K Tom Becker Being home for the holidays usually ensures us of the ominous family gatherings complete with crying babies' , hard-of-hearing elders and too many cooks in the kitchen. We college students are fair game for the less intellectually secure who challenge our new-found knowledge. So, when Uncle Henry confronts you with, "If you're so smart, tell me what you've learned at Penn State," thoughtfully pour more gravy on your stuffing and dazzle him with this bit of financial trivia. Let's pretend we have $50,000 to play with. We go out and buy XYZ stock at $100 per. We are able to buy 1000 shares or $100,000 worth because we purchase "on margin". Margin requirement is the percentage of up-front cash needed to buy stock. Currently this 50 percent. Therefore, 50K in cash gets us 100K in stock. Remind Uncle Henry how margin requirements were so integral to the stock market crash. He may not rememb...

"Homewood Trilogy": Romantic and realistic [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 14 November 1985

"Homewood Trilogy": Romantic and realistic Like the blues, Joan Kdgar Wideman expressed with feeling the "flip-side" of American living in the fiction novel "The Homewood Trilogy." Three stories recreate the evolution of Homewood, a black community located in the eastern section of Pittsburgh, Pa. In the "Homewood Trilogy," the reader hears voices which reminicse and bear witness to a one-hundred year evolution of Homewood from an nineteenth century American community to a ghetto of the twentieth century. The first story is "Dem Balla," a portrait of a black family (The Frenches) and an expression of the blackexperience. Wideman brings to life mini stories told by many voices. One voice tells the story of Freeda French's anticipation of death in the form of a china-man. Wideman uses specific events in Freeda's Life and creates impressionistic rhythms that represent a sad story. The reader feels Freeda's remorse when she finds her husband, "Big Hat"-John French, dead, wedge...

"Dream Into Action"- Howard Jones [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 14 November 1985

"Dream Into Action"- Howard Jones by John Dunnavent Howard Jones' new album is a welcome relief. "Dream Into Action" is a joyous, upbeat celebration of life. Jones has separated himself from the chic cynicism of "much of today's music, choosing instead to present his own optimistic views on life. The keynote of this album is honesty. In a perfect world, this is the music that Howard Jones would choose to play. With this confidence he delivers an album of admittedly commercial music that manages to rise far above its genre. "Things Can Only Get Better" states, "Future dreams we have to realize/A thousand skeptical hands/Won't keep us from the things we plan/And do you feel scared -1 do/But I won't stop and falter/And if we threw it all away/Things can only get better" ' In "Life in One Day", "Try to enjoy the here and now/The future will take care of itself somehow/The grass is always greener over there." These line are delivered with such conviction that one is compelled t...

Name Change a Mouthful [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 27 August 1986

Name Change a Mouthful It's a little like a newly married woman, no matter how many times she reminds herself of her new name, she still, without thinking, blurts out her maiden name. So it is with Penn State University at Hanisburg-The Capital College. An informal chat with the students-at-large reveals they still attend Capitol Campus. What's in a name anyway? Right? Actually tie name change is significant and long overdue. According the Provost and Dean Dr. Ruth Leventhal (Currents 3/86), "the first part of the new name—The Pennsylvania State University-at Harrisburg-seeks to give our academic unit a strengthened and distinct identity within the Penn State system, -reinforcing the fact that we are a part of the Peiin State University. Capital College recognizes the campus' long standing status as« an academic unit that grants baccalaureate and graduate degrees. The concent of a name change is not sudden. In 1972 the Black Student Union, commenting on the need to attract m...
