WONDERFUL DISCOVERY IN PRINTING . [Newspaper Article] — Prairie Farmer — 1 June 1845

WONDERFUL DISCOVERY IN PRINTING . 11 Y SOLOU UOIilNSON . What do you think , Mr . Editor , or rather Mr . Printer , of an art , or a new discovery in the art of type making , that would enable me , if I was writing in your office , though doing it with a sharp point on a sheet of prepared clay , instead of on paper , to cast a complete stereotype plate , fit it to the block , and clap it on your press and take an exact and perfect impression of this writing , or any drawing , or illustration of any subject by any figure that I was capable of making—and in a space of time not exceeding fifteen minutes after I had done writing . Or suppose , for instance , you wish to print the notes of a tune , and you have not a , type of music in your office ; if you can write the notes , you can furnish yourself with a stereotype plate at a cost of two cents in the same short space of time , with no more tools or fire than I can find in your office any cold day , And the metal , which is an entire...

ELGIN PLOAVS AND THRESHING MACHINES . [Newspaper Article] — Prairie Farmer — 1 June 1845

ELGIN PLOAVS AND THRESHING MACHINES . Although the neglect has been wholly unintentional on our part , wo have not done justice by our Elgin friends who have advertised with us , in noticing their manufactories . The Elgin plow was one of the first made in northern Illinois that would scour in prairie muck , and other makers have taken pattern after those made by Mr . Renwick . They are as famous , and give as good satisfaction as ever , and Mr . R . manufactures every kind that the farmer wants , and his sales are very great . The threshing machines made by Messrs . Sylla & Hadlock have been thoroughly tested for two seasons , and have proved to be good . They have now about 40 nearly completed , or ready to put together , in which they have been making some improvements upon those they have heretofore made . There is one important item in their machines —they are strong and heavy , and will last a long time . Mr . Hadlock took the first premium on threshing machines at...

EDITOR'S TABLE . [Newspaper Article] — Prairie Farmer — 1 June 1845

EDITORS TABLE . AILMENTS OF ANIMALS . Under this title , Mr . Abraham Smith writes us an article which seems intended to give us something of a blowing up on account of some directions published in our April number , for the treatment of cattle dy ing with inflammation from eating dry husks . His ground of objection seems lo be , the taking of blood in the case . This mayor may not bethobcstcour . se ; but our article was compiled from the most approved veterinary treatises we have ; and until Mr . Smith or somebody else gives us better directions wc must think them as safe to be followed as any . We would publish Mr . Smith s article , however , if it recommended any thing in place of ours , better or worse . As to Phlebotomy , we were not its inventor ; and though we think it-useful , others are at liberty to think otherwise if they please . Paris of the article are considerably savage upon us ; but never mind that . HON . H . L . ELLSWORTH AND J . S . SKINNER . These gentlemen , ...

MARKETS . [Newspaper Article] — Prairie Farmer — 1 June 1845

MARKETS . Prairie Farmer Office , Chicago , May 31 , 1845 . Business has improved on all hands wonderfully since the opening of navigation and the finishing up of spring work on the part of farmers . The roads * nave been pretty . uniformly good , and continue such . Wheal is pretty much exhausted from the country and of course finds ready sale for milling . We hear of flour going west beyond Fox River , from this city , and presume it will not- be unusual between this and harvest . Coarse grains find ready sale ; and the tendency of Beef and Pork is still upward . Immense droves of cattle arrive weekly from the -South ) Iseeking market through northern Illinois and Wisconsin . They consist in a great measure of very sorry animals , and many of them could never find sale but for want of better . The demand for them is principally created , by immigration . Horses find much readier sale ; and we notice considerable improvement in the quality of the animals offered . The prices are st...
