PTJBITY OF THE FBESS . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 17 December 1853

PTJBITY OF THE FBESS . Theatrical CriticismsWe have all along objected to the course pursued by the New York press in relation to criticisms on theatrical and operatical performances , Until the present time we do not believe one journal in tbis city has been honest enough to publish a fair , candid and impartial criticism . We read , almost daily , articles purporting to be a true criticism of this or that performance , but if the facts of the case be carefully inquired into , it will be discovered that the articles in question are not in reality the opinions formed by editors , * but that they are published at the solicitations of persons indirectly interested iu bringing themselves into notice , through the aid of influential journals . Editors and publishers are generally on the best of terms with theatrical managers and operatic directors ; they receive pressing invitations to suppers , at . which the leaders of the dramatic world figure conspicuously ; they are considered hale...

A Sporting Man . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 17 December 1853

A Sporting Man . During the Bennett tnal , oue of the counsel for Mr . Fry , having Mr . Samuel Suydam on the stand for cross-ex-amination , used such ungentlemanly language to the witness as to call forth the indignation of all present . The rebuke the counsel met with , will probably serve as a useful lesson for his future guidance . Trae Charity . It is not often we are called upon to record instances of true charity , but a case has just come to our notice , which we take great pleasure in recording : — Two wealthy gentlemen , well known in this eity , have each contributed one thousand dollan towards the Five Points Reformation , and what is still more to their honor , have actually refnsed to have their names made public in connection with their liberal donations . Such disinterested acts of philantrophy must surely meet their own reward . Vf % hope this little notice will be felt in its proper spirit by a curious people . Str .
