UNKNOWN [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 27 March 1886

The Working Classes and Poultry . Capital sometimes in large amounts is necessary for the raising of live stock . Hence those who desire to engage in some industry on the farm are often restricted , owing to limited means . The raising of poultry and eggs opens up an avenue to the working classes that many may accept and find it profitable . In fact , a few acres of land may he made to keep a family if devoted to poultry , but the profits depend entirely upon the management and skill of those engaged in the business . The greatest difiiculty to be encountered is that too much is expected . While many persons would be satisfied to secure twenty per cent profit from an in vestment in any other direction , yet they are not willing to accept thirty per cent when the capital is invested in poultry . Strange as this may appear , it is true . We know of a gentleman who considered himself very unfortunate because he had only derived $ 300 profit from $ 1 , 000 invested in poultry , yet the ...

APIARY [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 27 March 1886

APIARY Bee-keeping _ in Manitoba . To many it seems a matter of some sur prise that bees do actuall y live in Man itoba , says the Manitoban . They not only live but thrive . It has been thor oughly proved that they are a source of profit to those who take enough interest to give them the proper stud y and attention . When it is said that bees are profitable here , it means more for our province than one would naturally understand without further explanation . We have little else as yet , than the natural flora of the coimtry . This is not because more is not possible , but because this is a new country and farmers have not practiced mixed farming to the extent they will in the near future . Farming in a very few years , when the country is more thickly settled and new wants created , will be carried on very differentl y from what it is to-day . In variety of crops it will be more similar to the Eastern provinces . With this change comes a boom for the bee-keeper , for generally , i...

Economy Club Change . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 27 March 1886

Economy Club Change . Oar Club will hereafter be known as the NATIONAL CO- OPERATIVE CLTJB . We now propose to make it a great cooperative institution , national in its character . The object sought is by co-oper-ation to buy goods of any kind for its members at wholesale prices . Hence , the managers have concluded to adopt the above name as more comprehensive and better expressing its object . Articles of incorporation have already been filed , and the Club hereafter will be a legal organization . Its Treasurer and Manager will also be placed under heavy bonds , and Messrs . Howard & Wilson will both be members of the Board of Directors . We havj insisted on this being done , so as to furnish absolute protection to our readers who are members of the Club . Certificates under the new name will be issued as soon as they can be printed , to take the place of the old ones . In the meantime the old ones are good . Those who are entitled to certificates , who have not receiv...

Fraudulent Importation of Cattle . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 27 March 1886

Fraudulent Importation of Cattle . Tlie treasury department has received a report from a special agent in regard to the alleged fraudulent importation of cattle from Mexico . He says that calves are taken in large numbers from Texas into Mexico , where they are kept - several years and then returned as beef cattle . In this way , he says , great frauds are perpetrated , which can only be prevented by extra vigilance on the part of the customs offlcers on the border . Instructions have been sent to those officers to guard against any violations of the customs laws in this respect . Would it not be a better thing to abolish the duties and establish a reciprocal trade between the two countries , beneficial to each ? It would be about as sensible to maintain custom duties between Kentucky and Tennessee , or between Missouri and Kansas , as it is to keep up these bars—-old-fashioned , slippery and bendable poles at that , which will let all the breachy cattle through and stop only the ho...

A Swindlers' Paradise . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 27 March 1886

A Swindlers Paradise . The constantly reiterated caution of the reputable agricultural press of thn country seems to do little good Crowds of credulous persons continue to be fool el by swindlers . These offer old and worth less varieties of seeds , at great prices through agents , to farmers and others often agreeing to buy the resulting cron at fabulous prices , as . a bait to credulous ignorant or greedy persons . The stock of gudgeons seems as large as ever Of course the money paid is lost , or the notes given , adroitly drawn , go into the hands of innocent (?) third parties and must be paid . Meanwhile , those who took the bait must suffer for their ignorance or cupidity . It seems astounding that in twenty-five States these nefarious scoundrels are , today , doing a successful swindling trade , and that the agents of the organized swindles are operating in eighteen States So wide spread has this fraud become ! that the Commissioner of Agriculture has found it necessary to iss...

The Animal Industry Bill . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 27 March 1886

The Animal Industry Bill . The National Cattle Growers Association has spent a good deal of time in Washington on legislation looking to the outcome of the house committee s action relating to contagious diseases . They have not made considerable headway . Lately the association has prepared a revised bill , introduced in the Senate by Mr . Beck . Its provisions they propose to make the basis of pleuro-pneumonia legislation . The bill enlarges the sphere of the Bureau of Animal Industry , but aims to meet the constitutional objections held to exist to the measure introduced in the House . The pith of it lies in the section which has always been opposed on constitutional grounds . This section is as follows : Whenever any Stats or Territory shall fail or refuse to adopt and enforce proper measures of its own for the suppression of the diseases herein named , or shall refuse to co-operate with the Commissioner of Agriculture , it shall be the duty of the said Commissioner to certify t...

Syndicates and the Farmer . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 27 March 1886

Syndicates and the Farmer . The country is now being overrun with syndicates . We have gold syndicates , railroad syndicates , land syndicates , and syndicates for controlling all the great public enterprises . Leaving the syndicates we have combinations , consisting of associated capitalists , who manage and regulate the varied articles of manufacture . Even the workingmen organize into . unions , and use every endeavor to obtain advantages for their interests . The farming communities are unorganized , and become the prey of organized capital that seeks to wring from the agricultural classes a portion of their earnings . We are not drawing any lines of division between capital and labor by asserting that farmers should organize andco-oper-te for mutual advancement and protec tion . There is something else in co-opera-iion than aggression . Farmers contribute to all the public enterprises , not by donation , but by involuntary contributions . Every new transportation enterprise is ...

Find Out the Facts . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 27 March 1886

Find Out the Facts . The Senate passed without debate the bill providing for the commission of five persons to investigate the alcoholic-liquor traffic , its relations to revenue and taxation , and its general , economic , criminal , moral and scientific aspects . There ought to be no opposition to this bill in the House . Its object is information . Instead of somebody s say-so , let us have correct and reliable figures about this allimportant matter . If liquor causes the greater part of the crimes ; if it fills our penitentiaries and jails ; if it is the prolific source of pauperismj if it multiplies our insane—if , in short , it heaps upon us our taxes , let us know it authoritatively . Let us be able to point at the facts and figures , duly certified by competent authority . If , on the other hand , all this talk about the curse of liquor is a slander on a good name , let us find that out beyond a peradventure , and make some reparation to our benefactors , the liquormakers and...

Carrying Capacity of Water . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 27 March 1886

Carrying Capacity of Water . The moving or transporting power of water is estimated by engineers to be increased by the sixth power of the velocity . That is . a stream having a velocity six times as great as another will be able to transport material weight 40 . 056 times as much as that carried by the slower stream . The data calculated from by engineers as to the effect of the scour of a stream on the bottom is as follows : A stream flowing with a velocity of three inches per second barely produces an effect on fine clay ; six inches per second will raise fine sand ; eight inches per second will raise sand of the coarseness of linseed ; twelve inches per second will sweep along fine gravel ; twenty-four inches per second ( or 1 J miles per hour ) will carry pebbles of about one inch diameter ; thirty-six inches per second ( which is about two miles per hour , or about twothirds the rate of speed of a moderate walk ) will sweep along fragments the size of an egg . This may easily ...
