MOLASSES AS CATTLE FOOD [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 November 1903

MOLASSES AS CATTLE FOOD The experiment undertaken m Brooklyn , in feeding horses on molasses , caused little surprise there , says a New Orleans correspondent of the New York Sun . Molasses has for two years been in general use in Louisiana for the feeding of horses , mules and all live stock , and probably ninetenths of the draft animals in the sugar district get this food either alone or mixed with oats or corn . The animals like it , and are kept in splendid condition by it . Sugar mules , which are fed on molasses mainly , are worth from 20 to 25 per cent , more than the mules on cotton plantations , which are fed generally on cottonseed and cottonseed meal . Molasses has been a waste product in Louisiana ever since the improved processes in the manufacture of sugar have extracted more of the saccharine from it than formerly . It has been a problem how to get rid of it . The discovery , therefore , that it couldr . be used ns a food for live stock was of double value . Six month...

carlinvillein AKTDERSON SPEAKS . [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 November 1903

carlinvillein AKTDERSON SPEAKS . Mr . C . H . v :. Anderson , , ., writesr of Moore s Hog Remedy and Dipping Tank as follows : The purchase of your tank and remedy was the best investment we ever made . We believe , in fact know , that by using your remedy and following your plan we can clear several hundred dollars more every year on our hogs than we could without them . It is the only effective method we have ever found for getting rid . of lice on hogs , and we have tried many . It is also the easiest method and requires the least time . Wo do not hesitate to say that we beJJeve no hog raiser—by this we mean the average farmer—can afford to be without a dipping tank and your Moore s Hog Remedy ; and anyone who raises as many as thirty pigs a year can save the cost of the tank and remedy in one year . We have not made these statements upon the impulse of first thought , but have given your tank and remedy a failtest , thought the matter over several months and moke the above state...

A . G . P . A ., Mobile & Ohio R . R ., St . Louis , for full particulars . Bixler s Physical Training in Penmanship reverses the method previously employed by teachers of penmanship , by paying more attention to physical training than to form . Forms are merely utilized In training the muscles for their execution . The author correctly remarks that movement cannot be taught without consideting form , while the latter has been taught without attention to movement , and that there is , for this reason , no danger of neglecting any important factor of good writing under this system . THE ART OF MILKING [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 November 1903

THE ART OF MILKING J . A . McDonald . The art of milking is a subject that Has received very little attention from dairy writers . Why this is so only can be assumed that many of said writers do not milk the cow which they write about so glibly . Our most voluminous Writers on dairy matters are the professors of dairy husbandry at the experiment stations , and theBe men never milk a cow at all . The mliker and the cow must needs »• upon the best of terms if maximum amounts of milk shall be obtained . The milker must put himself In the place of the calf , and the same sympathy which obtains between the cow and her calf must obtain between the cow and tlie milker , if best results are to be obtained . This is not always so , and hence so many bad milkers in the country . The same person should , always milk the same cow , and in tAie same order . If Spotty is the first cow milked by milker No , 1 to-day , she ( Spotty ) should be the flrst milked by this milker to-morrow and after . W...

GOVERNMENT INSPECTION OF [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 November 1903

GOVERNMENT INSPECTION OF LIVE STOCK . The exhibitor of live stock at all the great fairs and live stock expositions , always has before been in great danger of his herds and flocks contracting contagious diseases . During the past there has been absolutely nothing done by our government to prevent diseased animals from entering the show pens at . the great shows . In many instances unscrupulous breeders have been to blame for the spread of disease . The purpose of this article is to arouse breeders to the great danger in exhibiting stock under -present conditions and to get their influence and assistance in securing needed legislation to remedy the evil . Swine breeders probably have more cause for complaint than breeders of any other class of live stock , for the reason that hog cholera and swine plague are almost always present in some sections and are always present at the great stock yards and packing centers of the countryWhen ever a case of glanders among horses , or pleuro pn...
