A S S O N O E Mr. Hainp, fresh from his home in England, knew hltlo of the properties of snow and ico, and at onoof the criti cal points in our ascent, trusting too much to their support, slipped and foil. For a moment his destruction seemed inevitable, but with admirable dextei ity he threw himself astride the icy ricLe projecting from the mountain. Impelled by this movement, with one leg dangling in the crevioe next the mountain side and the other sweeping the snow outside the glaoier, he slid with fearful rapidity, at an angle of for ty.five degrees, for the distance of fifty leot, failing headlong into a huge pile of soft snow, which prevented his de scent of a thousand feet or more down the precipitous side of tho mountain.
