a) She gatltj torimt. ASTORIA, OREGON: SUNDAY., . MARCH 1, 1E83 THE SILVER-QUESTION. Representative Dorslieimer of New York, introduced recently a bill for the manufacture of a full-weight silver dol lar. His bill proposes a dollar weighing 480 grains. The present one weighs but 412). This dollar would contain a dol lar's worth of silver; but for that very reason the short dollar men don't want it. The bill was introduced at so late a day in the session as to make its passage, or even a fair consideration of it impos sible. But it is bsed on the right prin ciple. If we are to continue to coin the silver dollar wc should put silver enough into it to make it a dollar. Yet even then, as silver is undrjing constant depreciation, tho value of the dollar would nut be steady. Silver is good as auxiliary money, but should not bo al lowed t " some the atandard. Yester day's Orxt, iian. It is bard to see juafc how that is "based on the right principle." In the first place the increase of silve...

W aUmta&maitita HHattasafeaBcaMsaMtaaatahaBttDBEtoriaai& She gaUg glstovum. ASTORIA, OREGON: TUIISDAV MAHCII 3, SSS TH A T RESOLUTION. At the adjourned meeting of the council last Saturday night a resolu tion was passed authorizing the city attorney to draft an ordinance re funding to the several taxpayers the amount of money they have paid to the city for city taxes in 1881, the warrants refunding the money to be taken by the city treasury for taxes only. The intention appears to be to levy a tax to the utmost limit this year a fifteen mill tax and use all possible endeavor to have it collected. This, it is argued by the originators of the measure, will be virtually the same as if a seven and a half mill tax had been levied in 'Si and a seven and a half mill tax were levied in '83, the idea appearing to be that those who neglected or refused to pay in '84 will be thus compelled to pay in '85. The Astokiax does not exactly see the feasibility of the scheme, but suggests thai...
