FROM OYER THE SEA. Articles of Commerce from the Tropics. HOW THE HINDOOS GATHER THE C0C01HUT Ports Where Olearine: Papers Prom America are Seldom Used. The marine investigator at Sandy Hook, casting his eyes seaward the other day, spied something; which unaccustomed eyes would not have seen. He clapped his glasses, fine double extra power ones, to his eyes and stood in a posture of scru tiny for niauy moments. It's a bark," says he, still focussing his glasses on the distant object. A shadowy substance besan to appear on the horizon. The eye of the landsman would have simply noted that something that sailed was approaching. "She's Nova Scotian," was the laconic utterance that came from beueath the binoculars. "Then it's the Strathay, now due," was the equally laconic outcome of a marine encyclopedia who stood near. Pretty soon the bark's sails loomed up against the horizon and she came whoop ing along in a. spanking breeze to the lower bay She was the Strathay, ninety days from Ind...

. WOMAN'S COLUMN, Smart Women in the Census .Bureau. THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN. Washington Extravagances. Legal Liability of Women. Wohavo in tho census office nearly 1,100 women. With the exception of 140 employed as skilled laborers, Ihey haxo all passed an examination in the various branches required. It is safe to say that over half the number have stood high in arithmetic, receiving all the "way from 83 to as high as 100 per cent. We have in the census office one room in which COO young ladies are en gaged under a woman chief making comparisons for the final tables of the census. Women are engaged in what is called working out the equated life of mortgages, also under a woman chief. A woman has had entire charge of the insurance division in the census office, which, though smaller than those refer red to above, nevertheless involves very important work. In this work I find women very satisfactory and conscien tious. As a rulo women just out of school are better for such wor...

NEVADA ROAD AGENTS. A Story of the Early Days of Staging. SHIPPING BULLION IN MOUSSES. A Millionaire's Son Traced by a Wheel Mark on an Overcoat. ' "Stage robbing was almost a legiti mate business in early days," said an old Comstocker. J'The express company lost a great deal of money in that way, and at last James Gannon was sent up to Virginia to break up the business. He was a shrewd man, and he devised more schemes for outwitting the road agents than you ever heard of. He sent treasure in sacks of potatoes, which were loaded on prairie schooners, and even the drivers never suspected that they were carrying anything more valuable than potatoes. I have known him to drop a bar of bullion into a cask of molasses and send it through safely, when he knew the agents were watching for it. It was Gannon who thought of sending shotgun mes sengers on tho stages, and he made them carry their gun3 with the muzzles rest ing on their toes, so that they didn't dare to fall asleep. Ho broke up s...
