" Beasts " In America. The early accounts of English trave lers in America must Lave been some what unreliable, if vro may judge from Mr. William Wood's "New England's Prospect," published in London, 1G3A, when our Puritan settlement was four-1 teen years old. Mr. Wood says, in one place : " Having related unto you the pleasant situation of the country, the healthfulnoss of the climate, the nature of the soile, with his vegetatives and other commodotie8, it will not be amisse to inform you of such irrationall crea tures as are daily bred and continually nourished in this country, which doe much conduce to the well-being of the inhabitants, affording not only meate for the belly, but clothing for the backe. The beasts be as f olloweth : The kindly Lynn, and the Rtrojif? arm'd Beare. The Urged lim'd Moones, with the tripping Deare, QuIU darting porcupine, and Kackooones bee, ClatttcUed In tho hollow of an aged tree, ' " etc. Quite an incongruous cummunity, certainly, to dwell together...

Pre-Raphaelite Ctothes. In Eng land there ia a little band of pre-rapha-elites, composed of painters and jxiets and art critics, and men Jwith a genius for appreciation, and their wives. Mor ris and his wife belong to this band, and Ilosetti and his sisters, and Holman Hunt. The ladies of this set have adopted a costume of their own. If you meet in society a woman who looks a.s if she had stepped out of one of Fra Angelico's or Perugino's piotnre, with loner skirts, that sweep but do not rus tle, fashioned of material costly as their purse can buy, but severely simple ; with jewels in quaint, antique setting ; with laces fine as frost-work...
