FISH STORY. [Newspaper Article] — Upper Hutt Leader — 14 December 1939

FISH STORY.

Many a tale has been told by the enthusiastic fisherman of the size of fish he has caught, but an-, other kind of fish story was re-; lated to us during the early part of the week, and considering where we gotiii from, can guar- antee it is genuine.. On Monday, during the floods, a certain well-known Upper Hutt citizen was driving back from Wellington. FLOODS IN THE DISTRICT. [Newspaper Article] — Upper Hutt Leader — 14 December 1939

FLOODS IN THE DISTRICT.

Monday was a very black day. for many people in Upper Hutt ...<" and district, the .-■": terrible" rain doing considerable :damage. living at the lower por- tion of Whakatikei Street, had to abandon their houses owing to. the floods rising and encircling their houses. The same applied to some residents at the Moonshine. ; '/. : Most unfortunate, however, was Mr. R. Christie, whose house is on '■-' the Mangaroa Road. The house slipped down: 12 feet and is at present overhanging a cliff face. Mr. Christie is a member of the Special Force and naturally was not at home. Mrs. Christie was in the city when the calamity-oc- curred. Old residents state that they have never seen river so high before, and much more dam- age was done than in 1931. Members of the various fami- lies who were- unfortunate with the flood water getting into their houses" were the "guests of other residents on Monday night.
