Correspondent of the New York Herald. New Treaty with Mexico. <> Washington, Jun. 3, 1854. We are enabled to State, upon ample authority, that a treaty with Mexico has been negotiated by General Gadsden, and is now before the President, and will probably soon be communicated in the Senate. ¶ The first article of the treaty in question provides that Mexico shall give to the United States such a boundary as will enable us to protect Mexico from the incursions of the frontier Indians. ¶ The second article provides for a right of way for a railroad to the Pacific, 'as a means' —to quote the language of the treaty—'of forming a commercial barrier against the attacks of the Indians. ¶ The third article provides for an abrogation of the eleventh section of the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which guarantees the defence of the frontier in consideration of money given which is to be in full of all past depredations ¶ The fourth article provides for the specific enforcemen...

Cos 3m)c(cs Star. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 18 February 1854

Cos 3m)c(cs Star. Saturday, February 18, 1(1,14. William A. Wallace, Editor. Democratic Address. Thirty eight members of the Legislature, including Messrs. McFar.'and, Carr and Hunter, of this County, have signed an address to the Democrats of the .State, protesting against the election of United States Senator this winter. It is a powerfully written document, and will undoubtedly have a strong effect upon public opinion. We notice that many petitions are being presented from various parts of the State of tho same import. We hope our friends will bear in mind the old proverb, that l! a licuse divided against itself cannot stnnd." Tho party in this State is strong; but they are not sufficiently strong to quarrel among themselves with impunity, and retain power. Look at New York—the strength of the party there is weakness, and has contributed to throw every branch of the Government into the hands of our opponents. It becomes the duty of California Democrats to avoid the fate of the pa...

Extracts [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 18 February 1854

Extracts From a Journal of a Trip from, G. S. L. City, ¶ Utah Territory, to San Bernardino, Cal. ¶ On the 12th day of December, 1853, some 24 wagons with between 80 and 90 head of animals, started from G. S. L. City for California, by the Southern route, under the title of "Reese's Train," for the purpose of taking back a stock of dry goods and groceries for the settlements in Utah Territory early in the spring. John Young Green was the Cap - tain and Pilot of the Train. As there was no proper organization at the start, every one acted according to his own notions, and the condition of the Train on its arrival at certain points has no equal. The animals when we started were not in a fit condition for such a journey, the most of them having crossed the Plains last season, and when we left the settlements, the feed which they carried with them soon gave out, and the animals had no subsistence except sage brush and occasionally a patch of bunch grass. Some twelve more wagons were added...
