COMPULSORY EDUCATION. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Herald — 16 November 1873
COMPULSORY EDUCATION. [Concluded. [ When this much needed improvement in our educational system shall have been carried into effect, we shall see fewerhighly cultivated minds rendered powerless for good, in consequence of being lodged in weak and puny frames; and a much smaller proportion of the immense number of graduates, that every year leave our public schools, thrown out upon the worltl almost entirely helpless, so far as regards the ability to earn an honest support. Our lawmakers, while endeavoring to model our public school system after that of Prussia, seem to have left out of view one important fact, that while the Prussian youth is educated up to the highes...

A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE CENTENNIAL. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Herald — 18 November 1873
A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE CENTENNIAL. It will be a part of the approaching centennial ceremonies, as it is always of the annual celebration of the 4th of Jujy, for our people to congratulate themselves on their great advance in enlightenment, and they will cite in proof of this their superior liberality toward those who differ with them in opinion. Vet nothing, it seems tome, upon which they pride themselves is more a matter of self-deception. They do not burn their opponents at the at the stake, it is true, and they have no inquisition of physical torture. They have learned by their ancestors that the application of the faggot and the screw is a precedent that may be used against themselves. If they burn their opponents now that they are in majority some day their opponents may be in a majority and may burn them. So they preserve their own lives by allowing others to preserve theirs. But the same spirit of intolerance is in them. They have changed its mode of proceeding; that is all. I...
