Bolters. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 8 September 1860

Bolters. Ex-SHF.niFK Broder, writing from Visalia to a friend of bis in this place, says that he is for Breckinridge and Lane —that he would prefer "Old Abe" to DoCQLAB, had he to choose between them.— Alameda Gazettee. Yes, the Northern and Southern extremists arc rapidly coining together. We hear Breckinridge men, every day, say that they prefer Lincoln to DOUGLAS We advise the Bolters to get back into the ranks as soon as possible, before they get entirely over to the Black Republican purty.— Nation. The Nati m (that was) is indeed a profound oracle in politics. The i lea that "the Northern and Southern extremists are rapidly coming together" is beyond doubt a rich one. The two parties designated as "extremists" must be the Abolitionists of the North, and the man-worshipping Douglas faction of the South. The former propose the imme liate abolition of slavery, and the latter that of Constitutions, laws, Supreme Court Decisions, and State rights. Stephen Arnold Douglas and his unho...

Senator Gwin's Speech. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 8 September 1860

Senator Gwin's Speech. At Stockton, Augst 29th, the Democracyheld a grand ratification meeting, which • was addressed by Senator Gwin. Never before in the history of California, was there such a spontaneous outburst of enthusiasm throughout a political discourse as at that meeting. And we believe that no man ever more completely vindicated himself upon his own record, from the false accusations lof a vituperative press, than did Senator IG\ in upon that occason. Men talk against Mr. Gwin, who never did read, and persistently refuse to read the record of his pub- ( ' lie acts and efforts to legislate for the Tacit- i ie Slope. This however, is an elaborate ef- , I fort on the pr clival questions pending bei fore the last Congress and the American I people. The Bright, Bright Flowers. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 8 September 1860

The Bright, Bright Flowers. Oh! they had looked upward in every' l» ace Through this beautiful world of ours, And dear as a smile on an old friend's face Is the smile of the bright, bright flowers ! They tell us of wand'rings by woods and streams; They tell us of lands and trees ; But th*hildren of showers and sunny beams Have lovlier tales than these — The bright, bright flowers ! They tell of a season when men were not, When earth was by angels trod, And leave* and flowers in every spot Burst forth at the name of God ; When spirits, singing their hymns at even, Wandered by wood and glade, And the Lord looked down from the highest heaven, And blessed what He had made— The bright, bright flowers ! The blessing remaineth upon them still, Though often the storm cloud lowers, And frequent tempests may soil and chill The gayest of earth's fair flowers, When sin and death, with their sister grief, Made a home in the hearts of men, The blessing of God on each tender leaf Preserved in thei...

"The San Francisco merchants will find it almost the only channel hy which they can communicate with the numerous business houses established in Tulare Vally, and the extensive mining region in the southern and eastern part of the county." The above boast is made in the first number of The Visalia Sun, a new paper just Rtarted with not to exceed twenty-five subscribers ! Should it be fortunate enough to number one year it would have been time to have made such a foolish boast. Sacramento Daily Demicrat.—This is the title of a new National Democratic paper published in Sacramento, and edited by M. G. Upton, Esq., Mr. Upton is an able and experienced hand at the business, and will do good service for Breckinridge and Lane. We welcime the new candidate for public favor to our exchange list, and hespeak for it a liberal patronage from all good Democrats. Rowdyism.
