l EL PASO TEXAS FKIDAY DECEMBER 31 1897. u 1 Fatal Parental Ambition "Tbe responsibility of parent dur- ioar toe scnooi-Komir term ui is a great one" explained a gentleman whose son baa recently obtained some prominence in a leading university In New England "though many parents do not realize it until it is too late. While I do not want to encouraie any child to relax any proper effort toward advancement or any parents to hesitate to assist their ohlld in that direction. I would also like to have them under- stand that there jtsucb a thing as crowding them. Crowding i de- trimental to education and injurious to the child in many ways. It is well enough for children to take the various grades in the public schools as they come along from year to year but If it happens that a child for natural reasons gets a little behind the proces- sion it is better to remain in that posi- tion rather than that the child is crowded to keep up. A Runaway Christmas Tree It was Christmas day. and some where the othertide of Fargo. We had been show-bound for threes days in Montana or weM have all been home. At a little mat on a man got on who was Boon talking farniliary. He seem- ed like an hone-t man; indeed the dominie detected a childlike note in his character which be suspected might come from the man's long life close to the (Treat heart of nature After he found that he could not sell us any lots in Cenirapol:s he laid aside business and told the following: story. We should have doubted parts of it had it not been for the man's intimate association with the great heart of na- ture. He said: "Queer place to spend Christmas gentlemen; but queer things are al- ways bappeoirg in a new country. Makes me think of a little occurrence t. it': i COST OP THE STRIKE. The Ensrlish Amalgamated Society of Engineers Giving' .Figures. Some idea of the extraordinrry drain upon the resources of organized labor that has been caused by the prolonged strike and lockout of the engineers and a' lied trades of England is afforded in a private letter received in New York from one of the leading officials of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers aid who is a member of the strike finance committee. When hostilities wer in- augurated the engineers society had in its exchequer gilt-edged secur'ties-a-ep-reaentinir without premium or interest an investment of $1.800 (MX). This has no shrunk to a half million dollars of which however $300000 belongs to the tick and funeral benefit branch and cannot be touched for strike purposes. There are 60000 members of the socle ty who have not been affected by the dispute and these have contributed one dollar each per week making a total of $00000 weekly or $1500 000 since the commencement of the lock...
