LAUNDRY/DRY CLEANING SUBJECT TO SALES TAX On Tuesday, October 2, a laundry list of new items was subject to the Texas sales tax for the first time ever. That laundry list of new taxes in- cludes just that — laundry. Texans are going to pay the state sales tax of 4 1/8 percent and any addi- tional local sales taxes on their cleaning bills. The most common type of bill is dry cleaning personal clothing. A $20 dry cleaning or laundering bill will jump to $20.82 - higher still if any additional local taxes are charged. But the new tax includes more than cleaning bills for clothing. Employee uniforms or linens such as table cloths or cotton napkins sent out to be clean- ed will also be taxed. Drapes that are repaired or steam cleaned also will be taxed. If you have someone shampoo a carpet or rug or have a suit mended or tailored or store a fur coat during the summer months, you must pay the new tax. Upholstery cleaning and repairs fall under the new tax, as do valet services at hotels a...

October 1 984 SACHSE SENTINEL Pag* VIEWPOINT, ® LET'S HELP THE BELT LAW WORK The State of New York de- serves much credit for recog nizing an idea whose time has come: the automobile seat belt law. The Highway Users Federation estimates •at New York's law, the first its kind in the nation, could save up to 600 lives a year, prevent 16,200 injuries, and save $258 million in medical and other related costs. One of the great advantages of a safety belt law is that its effects can be evaluated rela- tively quickly and easily. But the law must be given a fair chance to work. Public un- derstanding and support are crucial if the law is to achieve its full lifesaving potential. It has been proven that belt use reduces the chance of death or injury in a traffic crash by at least 60 percent. Sensible motorists will take such statistics to heart as the reason for the law. Attempts to increase usage in the U.S. over the last two decades by other means—either volun- tarily, with belt-reminder d...

Page SACHSE SENTINEL November 1084 Citizens Celebrate Cooper Construction EARL LUNA ELEMENTARY OBSERVE EARL LUNA DAY After 13 years of court-ordered delays and almost 30 years after authorization by the U.S. Congress, citizens of Cooper, Commerce and Sulphur Springs and many from the Dallas-Fort Worth area have reason to celebrate. And celebrate they did. The Cooper Lake Celebration, held last month, was organized to mark the new beginning for construction initiated by a recent appeals court ruling. That decision dissolved the injunction which has blocked progress on Cooper Lake since 1971. High school and jazz bands, a barbe- cue, and plenty of Hopkins County stew created a festive atmosphere highlighted by remarks from Con- gressman Sam B. Hall, Jr., an active proponent who has repeatedly sup- ported the project in Congress. Cooper Lake, to be built and opera- ted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is a multi-use project. It will provide flood control, water supply and recreatio...

"For CPS to accurately reflect a wide-range of goals, citizens from all over the city need to become active. We are definitely anxious to expand the nucleus of members we already have," added Holden. November 1984 SACHSE SENTINEL Page • planning o c (0 c by Bill Wood, CPA « 272-8567 DIVORCE AND TAXES The lax aspects of divorce are somewhat simplified under the 1984 Tax Act. While its divorce provisions are not necessarily fairer than under the old law, they are considerably less vague and confusing. llnder prior law, property settle- ments in divorce were taxable events and could catch the divorcing tax- payer by surprise at tax filing time. A common situation illustrates the problem. A husband transferred to a wife property that he had purchased for $40,000. If at the time of the divorce the property's market value had risen to S100.000, the husband was liable for income tax on the $60,000 of "gain." The wife then had a lax basis of $100,000 in the property and had no income taxes to pay if she later sold the property for the same amount. I nder the new law, such transfers will be treated as non- taxable gifts with (he husband having no income (ax to pay at the time of transfer...
