Engbrock Managing Editor Donnita Nesbit Fisher Editorial Government needs sunlight because dark is scary March 12 through 18 is Sunshine Week. Not a week where we all stand outside and bask in the glow of Old Sol. Not a week where we all pray the gray clouds will part and we'll see blue sky again. Instead, Sunshine Week is a time when newspapers and other media outlets across the country write editori- als, stories and ^pinion pieces about the pub- lic's right to know. In a time when terrorist threats are very real, an argument can be made for keeping some operations and investigations secret. But this should be the exception rather than the rule. When dealing with government on any level, citizens often feel officials look for legal reasons to turn down or delay Freedom of Information Act requests. The Freedom of Information Ac...

' &£¥ By BUM Gray Wylie High School student Austin Podowski insists he hasn't bitten off more than he can chew with the making of a film about teenage heroin abuse. The ambitious high school junior is making the film to satisfy a requirement for the Distinguished Achievement Program, in which students undertake an intensive, year-long research/production proj- ect to earn special recognition on their high school diploma. For students interested in art and performance fields, DAP is an opportunity to enhance their portfo- lios as well. Austin, who dreams of taking his film to festivals and breaking into the industry at a young age, is also hoping that this film will net him a scholarship for film school. Not shying away from a weighty subject, Austin's film centers around Blake, a teen concerned with his twin brother John's heroin teen as abuse. As the story opens, John over- doses. With his twin in the hospital, Blake decides to assume John's identity and go "under cover" to exp...

*** 1 V"Y«1 | ; _ ' - J'< .- 'V .-'?( Softball Close, but far to go Lady Mustangs still learning how to win By Greg Ford Having the talent to win, and know how to, are two different things entirely. When they're com- bined, the result can be a champion. Head coach Shelley Porterfield believes the Sachse softball team has the former. It's just a matter of them finding the latter. "I don't think that they're scared (of the competition)," she said. "I don't think Sachse knows how to win yet. They have the ability and the talent. They just need to get over that hump as far as I'm concerned." This past Saturday, the Lady Mustangs fell to 1-1 in District 11- ^ 5A with a 4-2 loss at Rowlett. P Sachse was scheduled to host Lakeview Centennial on Tuesday, and will play in the Arlington Tournament, beginning today. After that, the Lady Mustangs will play mostly district contests.
