APPLE STORAGE. [Newspaper Article] — Huon and Derwent Times — 5 April 1934

APPLE STORAGE. 'Last season's experience in thte storage of apples at Sydney, and es-; pecially at Brisbane, proved that the' problem of extending the life, of the. fruit till October or November has not ' yet been satisfactorily solved, 'for the losses. were greater, (so far as Tasmanian apples were ; con cerned) than usual last year. Various causes have been attributed to this result, the most general beiner the exceptionally wet weather during the ripening of the fruit.- While., this may have weakened the constitution of* the fruit, and to this extent been the cause of some of the trouble;, it has been asserted by- men who have given- the subject a great deal of thought and conducted some prac 'tical . experiments, that the chief cause of the breakdown of apples, in favorable as well as unfavorable seasons, is the freezing of [them, whereby they are 'killed,' the in dications of which are the brown, spots, or rot, that occur, usually commencing around the core. Two faults are sai...

At the Theatres THE PRINCE. [Newspaper Article] — Huon and Derwent Times — 5 April 1934

At the Theatres THE PRINCE. Here is a, new style of spectacular musical motion pictures launched' in Hollywood. Bristling with novelties, . glamour and lavishness, studded with brilliant all-star performers, set in a new, exotic locale, enlivened by 200 dancing girls 'Flying Down to Rio,' hits a new high peak in enter tainment with a basic innovation of an extravaganza enacted in mid-air on high-powered1 biplanes. This elaborate show opens at the Prince of Wales Theatre -this Saturday. 'Flying Down to Rio' provides, besides novel entertainment,, scenic spectacles worthy of admiration on their own merits. A closely guarded silk train racing against time, a murder in the bag- . gage car, two special and trusted guards secretly working to stop the train at all costs, still another mur der, a dying man and his daughter counting the minutes from Seattle to New York, a detective trying to solve the mystery — that's the list of char acters and the soat of drama in 'Silk Express,' which is ...

DEBARRED APPLES. [Newspaper Article] — Huon and Derwent Times — 5 April 1934

DEBARRED APPLES. j r ' Criticisni; ' of the action- of the Apple;- and;1? Pear Export .Council in debarring certain varieties of apples from export to the U.K. arid Con tinental markets continues to cause discontent and annoyance among fruitgrowers. Their complaint is not against the principle of improving the standard' and reputation of Aus tralian fruit, but on account of the lack of judgment displayed in draw ing up the list of favored' varieties. .Only recently the Victorian growers made a strenuous effort to get the Minister for Commerce to relax the cpnditions so as to permit Rymers .iieing shipped overseas, but when the Tasmanian members of t'he Council were referred to they (rightly or wrongly) refused to back down from the original list. Possibly it would have been better policy if members ; of the Council had' grasped this op portunity for correcting some of their 'admitted^ mistakes. However, it is too late now t'o ameliorate the posi tion for this season, but growers sho...

Motor Notes BUICK 1934 MODELS. Independent springing of front wheels is probably outstanding in the considerable changes made in the Buicks for 1934. The changes in clude transmissions silent in all speeds, vacuum booster for the larger brakes, semi-automatic starting with automatic choke, two speed idle, and automatic heat control, octane selec tor in combination with vacuum spark control, centre point steering, tri-beam head lighting, much more rigid' frames, , vacuum wind1 shield, wiper pump, and improved' _ no-drift ventilation, air wheel tyres, increased bore on the models 50 and' 60, _ - to compensate for higher car weight, increased' compression radio on the model 90, and reduced clutch pedal pressure- on all cars. ... The Buicks are fitted with split tie-rods and centre point steering. Huonville Water Supply DEFEATED BY NARROW MARGIN. [Newspaper Article] — Huon and Derwent Times — 5 April 1934

Huonville Water Supply DEFEATED BY NARROW MARGIN. ? ' ? ? - i Yesterday a poll was taken of the ratepayers in the Crabtree, - Grove, Ranelagh and Huonville districts, to decide whether the Huon Council should be authorised to obtain a loan of £14,500 to. provide a water- supply for that portion of the municipality. Polling booths were provided at Huonville, Ranelagh and Grove, and the voting was as follows:— For. Against. Huonville .. .. 116 41 Ranelagh . . ,32 42 Grove 16 19 Total .... 164 102 In order that the required au thority should be given, it was 'iueces sary that the affirmative vote ? should be two-thirds of the total number recorded. The total being 266, it was necessary that 177 of them should have been in- favor. The poll was, therefore, lost by the nar row margin of 13 votes. , The decision will naturally come as a disappointment to the ma jority of the ratepayers, especially as there was such a small number of votes required to carrying the pro position. THE FRANKLIN...

Overseas Fruit Trade HOW IT ORIGINATED. FIRST CONSIGNMENT SENT FROM FRANKLIN. [Newspaper Article] — Huon and Derwent Times — 5 April 1934

Overseas Fruit Trade HOW IT ORIGINATED. FIRST CONSIGNMENT SENT FROM FRANKLIN. Discussing the growth of the fruit industry of Tasmania a few days ago with our r epresentative; Mr J. H. Jacklyn, formerly of Franklin, but now of the Brisbane Fruit Exchange, said he believed the origin of the trade with the United Kingdom was the result of a suggestion made by the late Mr John Hay No. 1, who said he believed Huon apples could be carried! successiuiiy to angiana, and that as very, little other fruit was available for the Home markets at that time of the year, the apples would bring a good price. 'In 1884,' continued Mr Jacklyn, 'the second year .after I had arrived at Franklin, Mr Hay wasi so persistent with his idea . that I undertook to give it a try out. I got 50 cases of Ribstones and packed them in what were known as the 'long' cases. They were made of split tim ber, and' were 27 inches long. The fruit was not wrapped, but a sheet of newspaper was first placed in the bottom of the c...

Correspondence THE APPLE INDUSTRY. To the Editor. [Newspaper Article] — Huon and Derwent Times — 5 April 1934

Correspondence 'THE APPLE INDUSTRY. To the Editor. Sir- — The sentiment has been ex pressed repeatedly in your columns of recent months that some sort of co-ordination in marketing must take place before the apple industry can be placed upon a firm footing and the growers receive a reasonable re turn for their woik and investment; ? but while all may agree on this mat ter of principle, it is difficult to get support for the many marketing schemes that are brought to light. It is obvious that any board which is set up for the purpose of control must have the power to act, and if that board is ? composed of only growers, it is possible that it may not get the assistance vitally necessary from shippers and agents. If it is ' composed of both shippers and grow ers, as is proposed in Victoria, will all growers give full support, or will the question of vested interests and personal bias creep in and under mine the confidence which must ac company co-operation? As neither grower nor shipp...
