Seven new electorates are proposed, six of them being in the suburbs. Seven old electorates (Lang and six country ones) disappear. The alterations have to be approved of by the State Parliament. The number of the electors on the poll in the various Federal electorates is nearly 319,000. The i'ederal ijovemment has issued a Gazette authorising the collections from customs and excise to bepaidito the Common wealth instead of the .State. Another troopship, supposed to l-e the Custodian, bound for Sydney, was seen off the coast yesterday. . Melbourne Letter. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 28 February 1901

Melbourne Letter. [From our own Correspondent.] The rush of candidates for seats in the Federal Parliament continues, and it is quite plain, that with so many political aspirants going to poll, many undesirable persona will be elected, and that too with a mere fraction of the votes on the Roll. Particularly will this be so in the Metropolitan and Suburban electorates ; and possibly later on wo may see something similar iu the country districts. No doubt in one sense the rush for seats is a healthy sign, and if the elections could be decided by insisting that the success ful candidate must poll an absolute majority of tho names on the roll, then there need be no complaint but it seems now that not ten per cent, of the candidates will poll within a third of the available vote!). I do not propose to make this letter an electioneering advertisement and therefore need not mention any of the candidates by name. Of course I could furnish a list of the names of the candidates I should like ...

Booligal. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 28 February 1901

Boolisal. (From our own Correspondent.)' *. As advertised, Mr Chanter ad dressed about 50 electors in the Town Hall, on Saturday night. Mr. J. Flanagan was voted to the chair, and introduced the candidate. As that gentleman's opinions are so well known — always the same — it is needless for me to repeat then). Mr Chanter spoke for more than two hours, and gave almost word for word the matter con tained in his address to the electors. This has appeared in your journal before, so I need not repeat it now. He was patiently listened to, frequently hear-heared, and at the close a unani mous vote was carried in his favour. Three cheers were then given for him, and one for the chair. The weather lately has been re markably trying, and the past summer a very trying one. We are anxiously looking for rain. On Sunday last the Rev Mr Richards, Vicar of Hay, paid us a \isit. He created a very favorable impression. The sermons were worth going a long way to hear — being quite a treat, especially ...
