To the Editor of the "Independent Journal." [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 21 September 1849

To the Editor of the "Independent Journal." Sir,- For some weeks past I have been hoping, in vain, that some brother settler, better qualified than myself, would have taken notice of a letter, signed T., pub- lished in your contemporary, on the sub- ject of forming an Indian Horse Establish- ment in this colony ; the writer-supposed to be our worthy friend and brother settler, T. N. Yule, Esq.-is highly deserving of the best thanks of the colonists, and, as a horse-breeder, I beg most distinctly and sincerely to tender mine. ^ The subject, as brought before the pub- lic, cannot fail to produee conviction in every unprejudiced mind as to the realiza- tion of our most sanguine anticipations, after a dreaiy pilgrimage of years of un- productive toil. The plan, if entered into mutually and heartily and properly carried out, is at once the most feasible, rational, and prospectively productive of profit, of any that has ever come before the public since the foundation of the colony. I hat...

Public Meeting. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 21 September 1849

Public Meeting. A small but influential meeting of gen- tlemen, was held at the Fremason's Hotel, Perth, on Wednesday last, for the purpose of making preliminary arrangements for forming a Horse breeding Company, in conjunction with persons resident in India. On the motion of E. M'B. Broun, Esq., Besident Magistrate of Fremantle, W. L, Brockman, Esq., was called to the chair. The Chairman then read several letters from India-from T. Haggers, Esq. and others, addressed to the late G. Leake, Esq., proposing the formation of such a company, and giving opinions on the man- ner of proceeding and the great probability of its success. As the principal portions of these letters have been before published, we need not now give them insertion. Mr. Brockman said that he had enquired of His Excellency whether he was disposed to grant a company a long lease (14 years) of 50 or 60,000 acres of land near Cham- pion Bay, for the purpose of the establish- ment ; His Excellency replied that he had no...

ENGLISH EXTRACTS. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 21 September 1849

ENGLISH EXTRACTS. During the last fifteen years, only eight men belonging to the London fire brigade have lost their lives by accidents in the discharge of their duty, although the ave- rage number of fires in the metropolis has been two a day. AtLordEglington's tourrnament scarce- ly a knight could squeeze himself into the corselets of the middle ages. A curious experiment was made by the late Sir Samuel Meyrick, who possessed the finest collection of armour in the world. In his gallery hung sixty complete suits, one» the defensive arms of that heroic chivalry of whom we are supposed to be the dwarf sh degenerate descendants. Two of his nests, Englishmen of average size, tried p. the whole sixty in succession, and en mntered failure in each case. The chests id shoulders of the effete moderns were bund too brawny and broad for the pano plyAof their ancestors. Bw the operation of the recent regula tionwespecting the Board of Excise, it is saidlhe services of 800 Bxcise officers, and ...

To the Editor of the "Independent Journal." [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 21 September 1849

To the Editor of the"" Independent Journal." Sir,-One or two late numbers of that powerful and elaborate publication, the Government Gazette, has enlightened the public with the names of three additional Magistrates. Pray, Sir, is this a little puff of our immutable Government, to induce the neighboring colonies to imagine some great increase to our population, or is it merely as a necessary expedient to frighten little boys and old men into good beha- viour ? probably neither, but as Justasses and other like stock are very cheap in the market-in fact cost the Government no- thing-His Excellency being, as every bo- dy says, a man of great ability and cute perception, may have conceived that what is wanting in quality is made up by quan- tity. This little quiet town of Fremantle, is honored with a third J. P.; I should have thought two quite sufficient, seeing one of the two is a second DANIEL in legal mat- ters, but probably the many avocations of my fellow townsman, Daniel, such as...

THE INDEPENDENT JOURNAL. "Vox populi, vox Dei." FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 1849. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 21 September 1849

THE INDEPENDENT JOURNAL. " Voxpopuli, vox Dei'1 PR1DAYTSÜTEMBER 2Í1849. THIS important Meeting, an account of which we this day give, is we hope and believe a turn of fortune in our favor, and will prove the commencement of a new era of prosperity to our colony ; that it is a move in the right direction cannot be doubted, and it is now for the settlers ge- nerally to come forward and put their shoulders to the wheel which has been set going, and which if energetically pushed will do more towards realising the golden dreams of the original settlers, than any project which has ever been set on foot since first the European landed on these shores. For several years the idea of forming an Indian Horse Establishment among us has, at intervals been laid before the public, by some ardent admirers of the capabilities of the colony for the pur- pose ; but not until tbe present time, has anything effectual eyer been attempted. Various causes for this apparent inactivity may be advanced-the wa...

Local Intelligence. The Island of Eottnest is no longer a convict establishment, having been deli- vered over to Mr. Dempster, the lessee, on Wednesday. The Colonial Secretary, accompanied by Mr. Yule, proceeded thi- ther on Tuesday, for the purposo of making the necessary arrangements, and on the following day, Mr. Vincent,, the Superin- tendent, with his family, removed to Perth. CHAMPION BAY.-We perceive by our advertising columns, that the Messrs. Bur- ges announce their intention of forming a grassing establishment in this district, being the first public intimation of a migratory movement on the part of the flockowners, and an example which we hope to find speedily followed by many others. We believe the Government have selected Mr. A. Gregory as the Surveyor of the district. I -. mm. . Colonial Government, not Colonies. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 21 September 1849

Colonial Government» not Colonies. The home authorities of the present day mistake the founding and supporting of colonial government for the founding and supporting of colonies. They do not care for colonies, but they have a decided pen- chant for organising colonial governments, appointing colonial governors, and sup- porting both against annoyed and grum- bling colonists. English ministers now-a-days hold the faith that colonies are made for govern- ments, not governments for colonies. Catch any colonial minister in a candid mood, and if you assail him at that moment with representations against any colonial official, he will frankly tell you that it is his duty to support the men whom he has appointed, or whom he found already ap- pointed, and kept where he found them, .l'his is no imaginary answer ; it has been given to more than one of the unfortunate agents who have had to dance attendance at the colonial-office-to waste their hours in "the chamber of sighs," as the ante- cha...

T/ie name and address of the writer must accompany each com- munication. To the Editor of the "Independent Journal" Sir,-Will you allow me through the medium of your journal, again to bring to public notice, a subject which requires some little explanation on the part of the Local Government. In common 1 believe with the generality of our community, I have supposed that our present vGovern ment had laid it down as a rule to be in- variably adhered to, that all public works, such as buildings, repairs, &c, where com- petition for the execution of such might reasonably be expected, the performance of such work should be open to all trades- men alike, by tenders for its execution being advertised lor through the medium of the public jonrnals. I say that I innocently supposed such to be the rule, having for the last twelve months observed in ...

Original Poetry. THE SONG OF THE KNITTING NEEDLE. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 21 September 1849

Original Poetry. THE SONG OF THE KNITTING NEEDLE. Oh ! for the good old times -- For those golden days of yore, When, to clothe the leg was my only care, And I had to do no more. But, alas ! that the march of mind ! Which produces each change we see, Should bring about in its sweeping course, Such a woeful change for me. I sigh for those tranquil groups, When the fingers fair and kind, Led me so calmly round and round, With a single seam behind. But, ah ! for the sad reverse, For now as the hours revolve, I am made to work such problems out, As an Euclid could not solve. Infants I must adorn, With their hoods, and cape, and lace, And things of every form provide, For the grown up human race. I must weave mats for the jars, Where flowers their fragrance shed, And guard the sofa and easy chair From each greasy perfumed head. I have to ply-ply-ply, I must slip, knit, and purl, I'm the greatest drudge of the needle race, And live in a constant whirl. Oh ! that the statesmen kind Who cor...

THE INDEPENDENT JOURNAL. "Vox populi, vox Dei." FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 1849. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 28 September 1849

THE INDEPENDENT JOURNAL. " Voxpopuli, vox Dei." PEIDATTSEPTEMBERÍÍ 1849. IT is with much regret that we perceive a spirit of disunion, with regard to the pro- posed Horse-breeding Company, has began to manifest itself, fostered, we observe, by our contemporary, who directly charges the promoters with seeking their own per- sonal aggrandisement, rather than the ge- neral good of the colony. The writer of the article we refer to, which appears as editorial, must be grossly ignorant of the characters of the gentlemen who attended the meeting on the 19th Sept., and most especially of that of the respected Chair- man, who appears to be directly attacked, the resolutions having principally emana- ted from him ; we feel convinced there is not a single individual in the colony, save and excepting the limited clique whose views the article in quebtion advocates, who does not believe Mr. Brockman, as indeed his every public act since he first arrived in the colony has proved, is incapable of ...

Local Intelligence. GERALDINE MINE.-The Shareholders in this Company had a meeting on Wed- nesday last, when no tenders for the cart- age of ore having been received, it was de- termined to purchase a team for the pur- pose, and after proper arrangements had been made at the locality of the mine, then to apply for Tenders for carting. We are happy to learn that the proprietors have come to this resolution, as according to the wording of their previous adver- tisement for Tenders, it was evidently use- less to hope that any offer could be made ; indeed no man could be expected to con- tract to cart ore to " any place the Com- pany might direct," -setting aside the un- certainty prevailing as to the sort of road to be travelled. When these particulars have been decided we have no doubt con- tractors will be found. The number of military destined for the new district ia> we understand, one officer and thirty men, and in order to enable the military autho- rities to send this number,...
