Caucus Methods. [Newspaper Article] — National Leader — 20 April 1917

Caucus Methods. This is how the Trades Hall organ throws mud at such real men as Lieut Col. Plane: — ? ANOTHER TORY LIE. RETURNED SOLDIERS' ATTITUDE. ! NO CANDIDATES RUNNING. SECRETARY'S PLAIN DENIAL. MISERABLE TRICK EXPOSED. It has been stated that the Tory candi dature of Mr. Plane, the Methodist par son, for Brisbane, was not of his own initiative, but at the request of the Re turned Soldiers' Association. This state merit was flatly denied to-day by Mr. H. J. Robilliard, secretary of the Queens land branch of the Returned Sailors and Soldiers' Imperial League (late R.S.A.). In the course of an interview, Mr. Robilliard stressed the fact that the league was composed entirely of returned sailors and soldiers, and was the only body of returned soldiers officially recog nised both by the State and Federal Governments. He said that the reported statement about Mr. Plane was absolutely untrue. The league had no representa tives whatever in the field at the forth coming elections. The ...

RETURNED SOLDIERS IN BUSINESS. DISTINCTIVE SIGN SUGGESTED. (To the Editor of the "National Leader.") [Newspaper Article] — National Leader — 20 April 1917

RETURNED SOLDIERS IN BUSINESS. DISTINCTIVE . SIGN SUGGESTED. (To the Editor of the 'National Leader.') Sir, — In Brisbane and its suburbs | many of our returned soldiers are start ing in business, opening shops. I know from my own \ inquiries that, very few of | the general public are aware of this, j and, further, that most of them are anxi ous to patronise these shops. I would suggest that in the same, way that a barber's pole indicates his business, so a union jacic Hanging trom a poie piacea similarly would be most effective in ad vertising the returned soldier and his business. No one has more right to the Union Jack than he has; If properly worked it will prove an effective sign, provided that it is adopted by all soldiers in business, and that the fact is published in your columns. — I am, sir, Yours, ONE OF THE PUBLIC.

THE NATIONAL PARTY. [Newspaper Article] — National Leader — 20 April 1917

THE NATIONAL PARTY. So much criticism has been levelled at the National party by those who' care neither for the war nor for .the Empire that the repeated assertions by a section of the press that it is a National Liberal party cannot fail to damage the chances of ithe National candidates on. May 5 next. ? The National party is composed of men and women from the Labor and Liberal ranks who have eschewed party politics, and whose ideals are purely national. They believe in government for the people by the people — the only true democracy — not in government by a section representing either the unionists or the capitalists. In the struggle for existence » neither the unionists nor the capitalists have any right to expect ;a monopoly of political power, and it is the National party, as opposed to either the Labor or the Liberal party, that stands for responsible constitutional govern ment. Fred R. Brown, 331 Queen-st., Bris.. Senator Stewart stated at Taringa that but for the existence...

The National Party in France. [Newspaper Article] — National Leader — 20 April 1917

The National Party in France. The cry throughout Australia since the days of the conscription referendum has been for a National party.. Labor sup porters and Liberals .of all shades of opinion were agreed that party politics had been responsibly for the gross ignor ance and the partisan feeling which pre vailed among Australian people concern ing the war. , It was certain that the defection of large numbers of old and tried Labor supporters from the Trades Hall organisations would result in a big split in the Labor movement, and would tend to weaken the cause which was daily drifting under the vicious influence of the extreme socialists. At the same time, there wjere hundreds of people to whom the term party politics has always been anathema, and they set to work, immediately after the defeat of the con scription issue, to form a big National Federation. This federation has allied itself or has become allied to the various anti-socialist bodies, and the so-called National party is ...

R.S. & P.N.P. LEAGUE AND R.S.A. [Newspaper Article] — National Leader — 20 April 1917

R.S. & P.N.P. LEAGUE AND R.S.A. 'In what relation do the two returned soldiers' organisations of Queensland stand to each other?' is a question often asked by people who have never taken the trouble to read the correspondence concerning the two bodies. It is deplor able that many people are still in the dark as to the standing of the R.S.A. and the R.S. and P.N.P. League, especially in view of the fact that every returned sol dier is deeply concerned in the result of the forthcoming election. The officials of the R.S.A., immediately after the; pub lication of the names of the National can didates, explained through the press that their association was non-political, and that they were not concerned with the nomination of returned soldiers as candi dates. As a non-political body they could hardly be expected to put up one of their members as a candidate for the Federal elections, but as returned soldiers they can support the candidates nominated by the Returned Soldiers and P...

ANZAC DAY. [Newspaper Article] — National Leader — 20 April 1917

' ANZAC DAY. : | The arrangements for Anzac Day are now approaching completion, and there is every promise that Wednesday, the 25th inst., will be generally observed | with a deep feeling of solemnity. The demand for posters, 'Remember Anzac Day,' has exceeded that of last year. This is also- the case with the badges. It may be mentioned that the badge adopted for Anzac Day includes the winged lion of St. Mark (Anzac Day being on the feast of St. Mark, the evan gelist) , over which there appears, within ' laurels, thfe crest of Queensland — the cross surmounted by the crown — and at the foot of the badge Queensland's motto, 'Audax at Fidelis.' Queensland's crest and motto proved itself wholly 'ap- propriate for Anzac Day. Although the badges are being sold, the object is not for the raising of any large fund, but in order that everyone may have the op portunity of wearing a badge and paying a tribute to the memory of our dead. In Brisbane the Licensed Victuallers' Association have r...
