(From the S. M. Herald, September Oct. 1.) [Newspaper Article] — Illawarra Mercury — 6 October 1856

(From the S. 31. Ilerald, September Oct. 1.) The truthfulness of the extracts of letters, published in this journal yesterday, respecting a monster nuggot,,is disputed. Wo have again seen those letters, and find, that the extracts are correct. They wero addressed to Messrs. liensusnn and Co., and Mr. Thomas Spruwles. Other letters, however, of tlio same date, September 21th, givo ayery dillerent version ol the matter. A gentle man who lnid received a letter from his brother, has given us tlio following particulars.: . 'On Monday last a piece of quartz was taken out of ti hole in the paddock, just below tho parsonage, weighing about -l cwt., with a very small seani of gold running through it. The whofc mass may be worth £30, but not more. As you may well imagine, this has originated a report about the country of an enormous nugget being discovered. THE TURON. [Newspaper Article] — Illawarra Mercury — 6 October 1856

THE TUIiON. (From the Correspondent of the Bathnrst Free Press.) Since 1 last addressed you I have paid a visit to Palmer's Oakoy. There are few diggers tliere, but tliev all appeared very well satisfied. In one small gully leading' down to the creek, about ten miles from the river, I found five or six parties at work. The sinking is about ten feet, and the produce of gold fully realised 4 dirts.; pur tub. This is tlio hrst attempt at working any ot the hundreds of gullies that- fall into this creek, and it bus turned out so well, that I think the diggers will work moro of them. Herctofore they liavo lost a groat deal of time contending with, water, endeavouring to work the bed nnd somo of the points. . 1 was informed by a party about three miles from the former, that they sunk several holes, in all about 1 ;jO feet, on a. largo flat' near their residence, iu which they very con lidmitly assert they aro going to niako their pile ; ami from apneurunces, I really think they will. From tho evidence it would appear that near the resilience of Dr. Iloskings there is a water hole, crossed by a fence partly within the ground of the Dr. from which 'the neighbours liavo been in the habit of faking water. A few days previous to the one above named, Dr. Masking had stopped llie lluw ol tho water to the outside, upon which Palmer, opened the gate and went inside to get tho water, during which time the lan guage complained of was used.
