Scraps. [Newspaper Article] — The Braidwood Dispatch and Mining Journal — 24 April 1889

Scraps. A Chicago man who did not realise that Maine was a prohibition stronghold until he and his family arrived at one of the quieter sort, of Uav Harbour hotels was struck aghast when (he clerk informed him that there was not a drop nf anything to drink in the house stronger than Worcestershire seuce. The st Kilmer's raire was awful, and he expressed his opinion of prohibition laws, people, and towns in rather strong language. Finally he came down to the manager and declared that he did not think much of a house that did not provide refreshments for ihe guests. The manager began to get frightened, for the westener was to pay something like 200 dol. a week for himself and family. ' Well,' !-o wid, ' I can't give you anything ; but T Iini e r'riend, and perhaps he can. I'll give you a line to him.' A moment afterwards the Chicago man went out, bearing a curd with this inscription — ' Dear Mr. Parsons : Please save this mniv's life — J. B. K.' The bit of pasteboard worked like a cha...

The Embarassments of a Preacher. [Newspaper Article] — The Braidwood Dispatch and Mining Journal — 27 April 1889

The Enibsirnssmi'iits of n Pwn Under the title ' Trials of a Nonconformist Minister,' the Westministkh Review lapses into anecdote (imported from an American connection) : — 'A minister had been invited to fill a vacant pulpit. He was the guest of leading member : and his host said he hoped he would avoid .saying anything in his ser mon, to ofleud the Spiritualists, as there, were many in the town who attended their church Walking dowu the street, another lending light of the Church was met' who hoped he would not say anything to otl'eud the. Just as he was entering the pulpit one of the deacons buttonholed him and said, ' The largest liquor-dealer in town is here in his pew ; I hope you will not find it necessary to refer to that business.' Music in Church. [Newspaper Article] — The Braidwood Dispatch and Mining Journal — 27 April 1889

Music in riiiiivfli. Something lika a serious effort seoms about to bn made at last (says the Stamford) by the proposed Church Music Reform Associa tion to promote congregational singing anil responding.' The association is well descrv intr of suunort. nnd few churchgoers, wctliink. will bfi liardy enough to deny that in the congregational ringing of the present day there is great room for improvement. We are not, indeed, sure that the fault does nut lie (juite as much with the congrcgiition sis with the music ; but a change in the latter might lead to some amendment in the former, and at all events the experiment is worth a trial. Every one knows that there are per sons to be. found in almost all congregations who, whether from mere vanity and ostenta tion, or from an idea, that the loudest voices are the surest tokens of sincerity, and there fore the most acceptable to Heaven, and really to speak the plain truth, nuisances to all who sit near them ; however much they may help on t...

A Strange Story. [Newspaper Article] — The Braidwood Dispatch and Mining Journal — 27 April 1889

A Struugc Story. The Paris Tfiiijin publishes a letter from its correspondent in Madagascar, who status that an English limited liability company has been established in the island for the mniiufuvture of false French money. 'Will you believe,' lie inquires, 'that these rascals look upon the operation as perfectly legiinate, j and only hides themselves from the llesident. ? General J' However, it appears that that 1 functionary has had nit eye upon thorn for some time, and was just upon the point of discovering tlieir crime when one the com pany confessed, and the manufacture lias been stopped — at least provisionally. Twenty coining machines had been imported from England, with which mow than ;')00,000 five franc pieces had been manufactured. The corespondent of the 2'emm likewise states that an English slave-trailing company has been founded on the west coast, and wonders whether tlse. English Government will svccviso.
