The Standard. PUBLISHED BI-WEEKLY. Bonoath the rulo of men entirely just the pen is minlitier than the sword. ■WEDNESDAY, Al'KIL 211, 1911. Wiii'.x t!iu lighting of Yavram was undertaken by the local butter factory it was thought by nmiiy that the.wholo ,of the streets in the town were to be illuminated. By some means the side streets wore overlooked, and negotia tions were entered into with the shire council for the lighting of Connueicial street 011I3'. .Since then the town has grown. Towards lifty dwellings have been erected in streets Unit at ni^ht a darkness prevails that can almost be felt. To add to the discomfort, some of these streets are hut partly formed, while others that have received atten tion arc so full of holes that one en counters a puddle at every few steps. Take James-street as an example. It is very dillietilt at night to keep in the middle of the long straight footpath, even if one were not endeavuring to dodge the holes that abound. Tarra Valley. [Newspaper Article] — Gippsland Standard and Alberton Shire Representative — 29 April 1914

Tarra Valley. (K1I0M OUIt OWN* COKRESI'O.VDKXT). Verily has the poet sung well wlien lie mused those words "Then come with mo where the lyre bird calls, and fern trees grow by the waterfalls,' etc." Could a stray wanderer from any of the cities have dropped in casually to the State school, Tarra Valley, last Friday they certainly would havo been convinced of the fact that talent exists even in the bush. It was a great day for the children of the above school, who along witli the Womerah school children, celebrated Discovery Day. About 10 children were in attendance, and before the lengthy and varied pro gramme was carried out, remarks suit able to the occasion were mado by Mr. Frauie, head teacher, Tarra Valley, and Mr. Jeffrey, head teacher, Wom erah, who reminded the children of the great debt owed to Capt. Cook, chief discoverer of this groat country. Wliilo Mr. Jeffrey hoisted the " U nion Jack," Mr. Frame led the children with our National Anthem. The Valley scholars presented ...

People's Party. [Newspaper Article] — Gippsland Standard and Alberton Shire Representative — 29 April 1914

People's Party. The apathy of local liberals was forcibly demonstrated on Friday after noon last. In anticipation of an early dissolution of both of the Federal Houses of Parliament the Liberal leagues called for nominations for the six Senate seats. A number of gentle men were nominated, and every mem ber of every branch of the three Liberal leagues in Victoria was to be given a voice in the selection of the Senate candidates to contest the next election. The secretaries of the branches were asked to forward a list of their mem bers, and ballot papers were sent to all the branches. The local branch of the A.W.N.L. held a mooting for the conduct of the ballot of their members, and on Friday afternoon last the local branch of the People's Part}' called a general meeting of the members to conduct a similar ballot for the selec tion of six Senate candidates. It is highly improbable that the members do not know how active the Labor party enthusiasts in the district have been in canvassi...
