Our Letter Box. THE KNOWLEDGE OF SWIMMING. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh and Caulfield Times Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully Guardian — 13 February 1915

Our Letter Box. THE KNOWLEDGE OF SWIM MING. To THE EDITOR. Sir,-May I through your col umns draw the attention of your readers, and especially those who have young children, to the ini portance of knowing how to swim. It is a regretable fact that in Vic toria alone the number of deaths from drowning averages something like 3 per week and it is indisput able that in nearly all cases the sad consequences were due indirectly to ignorance of the laws of swim ming. There has been a certain amount of reasonable excuse in some parts of the country where it has not been possible or convenient for children to be taught, but the Education Department of Victoria is to be congratulated on the signal success of the swimming basin which was instituted with the idea of imparting a thorough knowledge of swimming to the children at tending the State-schools. It has been tried and found very success ful at Ballarat, Footscray, Bacchus Marsh, Sunshine, Longwarry a:d several other places, and the resul...

Oakleigh Bowling Club Bazaar. (COMMUNICATED) [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh and Caulfield Times Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully Guardian — 20 February 1915

Oakleigh Bowling Club Bazaar. -I&----- - (CoiMMLNICATEPD) As will be seen by advertisement the Bowling Club intend holding a bazaar in the Mechanics' Ha!l on Friday and Saturday, March 12th and 13th, and perhaps ; little in formation about the Club alight not be amiss Some. nine years ago a small number of men met together and decided to form a Bowling Club at Oakleigh, not that they were ar dent bowlers, for I think I am right in saying that only two or three men in the whole district had ever handled a bowl. The reason was to see the town kept up-to date and have its clubs for amuse ment like other places. Now to form a green the initial expense was no light task, but these men dipped deeply into their own pockets, and what was the result? This can be seen by a visit to the corner of Logie and Drummond streets, where can be seen the prettiest and best kept spot in the Borough of Oakleigh-a plot of ground worthy of the place. Con siderably over ,/1000 has al ready been spen...

Sir, --We have in the Mulgrave Shire Counci one fixed star of unknown magnitude in Cr Mc 1, rinau. round whoml some fiv_ other stars have their orbit. With them are working some smaller constellations, and we now find that one of these (in the Road Foreman) is authorised to denude the frontages of the rords of the timber which beaintifies a few of our roads. Now, Electors of Mulgrave, I want youtt to get rid of our fixed star, so that the other five satellites m-y work on their own orbit and exercise their undoubted ability in looking after the interests of our Shire-I am, etc. WAKE UP.

THE meeting held on Monday night re baths for Oakleigh was , well attIended, and from the In terest manifested there appears to be a fair prospect of the project niaterialisiing during the next few monthl. It has iniig hung fire, ip-;Iy tiiroui l tf: difficulty of fi:i?ig ow! a a;ite ",uitable for all parties. About halt a dozen 5ites were sngzS-sted and their respectiv( merits discussed, but no finality was arrived at, and eventually the creek site was selected as a way out of the difficulty. It has beet: condemned by the Engineer, whc does not appear to have taken cognizance of the alternative scheme for making baths in the Gardens or Police Paddock from water supplied by the clayhole in the brickworks, where there is apparently a plentiful supply jf excellent water. The question of distance here arises, as baths erec ted at the gardens would entail a long walk to and fro for residents in Oakleigh South and West. The original proposal was to obtain baths for the school children, a...

TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh and Caulfield Times Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully Guardian — 20 February 1915

To THE EDITOR. Sir,-We the undersigned resi dents and ratepayers of Davey avenue note in your last issue the report of the special meeting of the Borough Council. In this you re port Cr Corr as saying, that some of the ratepayers of Davey avenue rather complimented the council on the way in which the work of making this street has been carried out. We do not know who the ratepayers he refers to are, but we have our doubts as to their being residents. We may, in reading the above statement In cold print, have missed a sarcastic tone our repre sentative may have intended. If so, having missed his meaning, we just take the statement as it is and cannot let it pass without cor rection. We understand the con tract was let in October and was to be completed in two months. It is now February and the street is apparently only half done; some ot the drain pipes were broken and are not yet mended. All the plugs are buried under what is alleged to be a footpath-in reality some small metal thro...

Cr Knight: I was rather disap 'onlted that Mr Langford did not give a written report, but he said he would not charge for it. His main objection to the site was the dirty drainage and still water, which excavation would intensify.
