A SPLENDID SAMPLE OF WHEAT. [Newspaper Article] — The Border Morning Mail and Riverina Times — 25 November 1903
A SPLENDID SAMPLE OF WHEAT. Yesterday Mr. Owen Hickey, brother of Mrs. Mullavey, widow of the late Mr. Peter Mullavey, of Greenfield Farm, Bowna, brought to this office a splendid sample of purple straw wheat, grown in a paddock of 300 acres. The heads are about 6in. in length, each head contains from 75 to 80 grains of wheat. Sixty straws have been produced from a single grain of seed. Twenty pounds of seed wore sown, with 56lbs. of fertili- ser to the acre. The seed was worth 1/, and the fertiliser 2/6 per acre. The yield will equal 32 bushels, which will fetch, say, 3/ per bushel. The crop will be harvested with a reaper and binder, and when thrashed will yield eight bugs to the acre.
