GREENROOM GOSSIP. ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS. [Newspaper Article] — Punch — 5 March 1914

GREENROOM GOSSIP. ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS. "G.S.S." (East St. Kilaa).—"A White Elephant" is the name. Both Brough and Roberts were in the cast. "L.T." (Mordialloc).—1; She was married in 1897 to Mr. Stewart Oliver, who occupied a position in the Indian Emigration Department. 2. Don't know. London critics are dreadfully disturbed by the production of "Who's the La^iy ?" at the Gar rick. This farce-comedy from the French, which will "be produced at the Princess's Theatre, Mel bourne, in August, was described by the "Daily Mail" as "risky," "sultry," "naughty," "im pudent," "unblushing" ; and en top of this criticism the Bishop of Kensington sent two trusty henchmen to see and faithfully report on the farce to him. One reported : "It's' very funny, really clever, and humorous. I wouldn't mind my wife seeing it. In fact, I pvopose to -take her." The "Telegraph"' described the piece 'as. a jolly, rollicking, winking, nudging farce" ; but the ""Express" said it was prob ably "the most s...

MODERN M Remarkable Cures BY ENTS TO NIG RECENTLY IN FRANCE, a peasant woman whose little girl.had been bed-ridden with paralysis for years, had occasion to visit a churchyard which contained the statue of a well-known saint. Some of the mould from the tomb adhered to her handkerchief, which upon touch-, ing her child cured her. This fact is vouched for upon reliable authority. Miracles are not at all confined to the older countries, for we have heard also of similar remarkable incidents in newer countries, and very often in Australia, where only eighteen short months ago a certain section of Broken Hill was electrified by the recovery from apparently incurable St. Vitus Dance of the daughter of Mrs. R. A. Addington, of Argent Street. It was on the ioth' October, 19 n, when first the mysterious. cure was reported. The mother, being seen by a special interviewer, and overcome by gratitude that her daughter was healthy again, told the facts at once. She said that the disordei occurred...

PARENTS' COURTS. [Newspaper Article] — Punch — 5 March 1914

PARFNTS' COURTS. E. F—The. success of the Children's Courts in Victoria is now admitted by all, save perhaps a few case-hardened constables , who believe in the publicity and drastic punishments of the old method. The object of privacy in Child ren's Courts is to spare the oKendors the neces sity of carrying!' for ever afterwards the stigma of a criminal—a stigma which, no person will deny, is the severest handicap to the reform of. a criminal. The chief aim of the magis trates is to reform rather than to punish, to arrange that the punishment shall consist in placing the culprit under official observation, to gain employment for him—in short, to make him see the error of his ways, rather than send him to gaol to jherd with older and more hard ened law-'breakers. Figure;;, which need not be quoted here, prove conclusively that the new system is incomparably .;uperio: to the old in its effect of reclamation of first offenders and the reduction of the number who commit a second ■ offe...

^0 IS My prophesy with regard to flying machines, as may be seen by the original statement here with, was made twenty-eight year1: before the French aviator brought his machine to Austra lia, which was on 2nd November, 1!)10, or two weeks before his successful flight.. Subsequently Mr. Hammond flew over the city. He remarked, "I was too early , .for breakfast, and just thirty years too late's to claim E. W. Cole's prize of £1000." I believe that the advance of flying machines will be so rapid that within the next decade they will be used with as much ease and safety as any other means of present locomotion. I further state that their utility will be so great as to enable China, with her three hun dred millions, to succeed in taking correct statistics. And eventually the velocity with which they will fly may materially assist in; establishing the peace of the world and the Parliament of Man. jjt w. COLE.

A Wonderful Search Journey oyjhe.40 principaljiodeg of travelling in the World* ar I h&ye alway* been a mail of one idea at a time, and that one idea I have followed 'with unwavering1 determin ation until success has re warded my efforts, q Now listen to my story A short time ago, much desiring to obtain a particular article, I determined to get it if it was possible to do so in this world, and so started on my Search journey. I ran into Melbourne and asked His Excellency tlie Governor of "Victoria if lie knew where I could get it, he said he did not but I might ask the Rajah of Sarawak. J took ship to Sarawak, asked the Rajah, he said he did : not know, but referred me to the Mikado of Japan. I jumped into a boat, pulled to Jedo, asked His Dual Majesty, Lord Paramount of Japan, and head of the Sintoo Faith, he said he did not know, but perhaps the Tycoon of Japan did. I got into a jimriksha and was trotted away to the house of the unfortunate Tycoon, he said he could not he...
