THE PYRAMIDS FOR WHAT PURPOSE WERE THEY ERECTED [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 18 March 1898

THB PYRAMIDS FOR WHAT PURPOSE WERE THEY ERECTED This question has been much controverted. The opinion is that the p\ramids were the granaries of Joseph, which may be confuted by the smallness of the rooms, and the time required for their building. The Arabians generally think they were built by King Saurid, before the Deluge, as a refuge for himself and the public records from the flood. Josephus, the his torian, who wrote .A.D., 71, ascribes them to his countrymen during their capthity in Egypt. Shaw and Bryant believe them to be temples, and the stone chest a tank for holding water for purification. Pauw, a contemporary with Shaw und Bryant, consider the Great Pyramid as a tomb of Osiris. Others supposed! the Pyramids to have been associated with worship ; in conjunction with which, it may be mentioned, that in the Sandwich Islands, Ellis, the missionary saw a pyramidical structure, in front of which the images were kept and the altars fixed. But the greater number of writers, anc...

The Dreyfus Case. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 18 March 1898

The Dreyfus Case. The affair Dreyfus seems to be committing France to a host of follies. The nuh, e'iger enough for any excuse for a row, has stated a campaign against the Jews. One may weil ask, why a 1 this bother ? One very bad phase of the matter is that the opponents have appealed to the wor.-t in-tincts of the worst classes in France by making the cry against Dreyfus an anti Tewish one general y. The cry of the mob, -'Down wnh the Jews!' has been r.iNed throughout the country. In Paris several have been greatly maltreated. In England and the coloni s it has long been recog* nised the majority of our Jewish fellow-countrymen as amongst our best and worthiest citizens, and it remains for France with its boasted 'Liberty, Equality, and ; Fraternity,' to raise against the Jews that- creed prejudice which is a remnant of the ignorant and fanatical Middle Ages.

The Judenhetze in France. To the Editor of the "Age" [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 18 March 1898

The Judenhetze in France. To the Editor of the ' Age' gif) — We of the Hebrew faith have so long adapted ourselves to the reception cf cold comfort that the warmth betrayed in your sub-leader to- day in defence of the Jewish position, and in sympathy with our co religioj.ists in France, in the troubles resulting from the inconsequential frenzy of the French p ople, comes as a pleasant surprise. I would like tre opportunity of acknowledging sarre, as also oc pointing out wherein you fall into error. You say ' it is the solidarity of the Jews, their unwillingness to mike converts or in any way to derogate from the aristocracy of the Hebrew nationality, which makes gentiles doubt whether loyalty to any particular country outside the borders of Palestine can exist amongst them.' And again it is the Jews who decline (to inter-marry), ' and not very long ago one of their ministers in Melbourne declaimed against such mix'd marriages.' And you deduce from these allegations. a natural hostil...
