THE FLOOD AT NYNGAN. [Newspaper Article] — The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate — 5 May 1894

THE FLOOD AT NYKGAN. Owing to the heavy riin whioh has fallen in the west, the country for mile* around Nyngan has been flooied within the last week. The rainfall, as far as the Nyngan district is concerned, wbb a phenomenal one, and a flood was feared. The Nyngan Council wired to the Government asking that a large boat should be sent. The request was at onoe acceded to; and the boat despatched. Fortunately its aervioes were not required to any great extent. The first reports to hand (torn higher op the Bogan caused great alarm. It was rumoured that the Hudall dam had broken away. This would itwlf hare been sufficient to pat Nyngan under water; and there was a probability that Daroable Dam, 10 miles nearer Nyngan, would alao give way, when tbe results would have been most disastrous. The reported breaking of the Modal dam transpired to be inoorrect, only a «m&] 1 outside haring subsided, forming a bywash sufficient to let a fairly large volume of water down. It took about el...

NOTES AND COMMENTS. [Newspaper Article] — The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate — 5 May 1894

NOTES AND COMMENTS. The result of the Hospital collec tion in Sydney on Saturday last must be exceedingly gratifying to the promoters of the movement. The fact that over £1800 was setted for distribution among the metropolitan charitable institutions mnBt be re garded as most satisfactory, especially when it is considered that the Saturday chosen was the last in the month, ft time when many persons (snohas Civil servants) who are paid monthly are likely to be ill-prepared for the call made upon them._ The response of the working classes is also a feature for favourable comment, as, even though the hospitals are of more benefit to those than the wealthy, the liberal manner in which the working men contributed exceeded the expec tations of the most sanguine. An amusing incident of the collection was the disappointment of many of the ladies who had received some of the new farthings, and had estimated the result of their collecting in the belief that these coins were half sovereigns. Double Tragedy. [Newspaper Article] — The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate — 5 May 1894

Doable Tragedy. A doable tragedy occurred at abont noon to-day. An Austrian servant girl, Mary Piaggi, aged about 15, living in Mary-street, near Belmore Park, was shot twice in the head. When assistance arrived there was no sign of any suspicious person on the premises. Shortly after the police heard a shot in a latrine in Belmore Park. On going in they fonnd an Italian fishmonger named Corlessi lying with a bullet wound in his head and a six-chambered revolver in his hand, three chambers having been recently discharged. ^He was con veyed to the hospital and died shortly after. The girl Piaggi has also {since died. Corlessi was a friend of the girl's parents. The most perplexing point is his motive for the murder.
