EXECUTION OF BURKE. Thursday, November 29. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 15 December 1866

EXECUTION OF BURKE. Thursday, November 29. The last scene of the Greenborough tragedy was enacted this morning, and the bushranger Burke has ex piated his offences against society by a violent death. At the appointed hour Mr. Claude Farie, the sheriff, in the usual manner demanded of the gaoler, and received the body of Burke for execution. The wretched man stepped from his cell with a firm demeanor, and stood motionless' looking up at the bright sunlight, while the executioner pinioned' ft is arms at the elbows, removed a handkerchief from his neck and placed over his head the white cap.. His religious attendant then commenced to read the burial service most impressively, and Burke was placed on the drop. With the exception of looking slightly paler than wl»en> o» his trial, his face presented the same firm and; implacable appearance ; the eap was then drawn down, and while the minister continued te read the service, the doomed man audibly following him> op engaged in private...

(to tub editor op the "bega gazette Sib,—Permit me, through your valuable journal, to call the attention, of the public to the state of St. Peter's ^ church, Panbula. About six months ago the foundation stone of thik church was laid ; the building up to this has made won derfu! progress, so much so that it is now fit for the root. With regard to its masonry,I need not say a word. All who-pass by the way can see the building and judge for themselves. It iB able to bear inspection,, and so far is an oroameEjt to the town of Panbuia and a credit to those who assisted in its erection. The sum of £177 8s. 7ti. has already been; expended on it, and it is calculated that about £80 more will roof it in, and fit it up tor Divine Service. The Treasurer has only £1 14s. 3tl. in hand.. We trust to the charity of the public to be able to get the remainder, and appeal especially to those of our own creed for aid to enable us to complete the building. SPECIAL CONSTABLE versus POLICE. (Before the Braidwood Bench.) Michael Connell, on remand, was brought up for exa mination. Special constable Carroll stated that one of the witnesses summoned had not arrived from Sydney, and that Mr. Fell, the solicitor, another witness, was not in attendance. Mr. Hensley informed the Bench that Mr. Fell was indisposed, and handed in a medical certifi cate to that effect, but stated that Mr. Fell would be wil ling to give any evidence it was in his power to do if ar rangements could be made to examine him at home. Be fore proceeding with the case. Special constable Carroll drew the attention of the Bench to the way in which the police had behaved in re frence to these cases. He had no hesitation in saying that they had placed all kinds of obstacles in the way of his getting at the harbourers of the outlaw Tom Clarke and his associates. Mrs. Connell, for instance, was per mitted to hold a conversation with her husband this morning at the lock-up. He ...

A Foreigner's opinion of Australia is a': present going the rounds of the press : it is a translation of the Spanish cf DoJ^ Henrique Mantaxo's travels in the Aus tralian colonies in the years 1854 and 1855, published in Madrid. Although not very flattering to Xew South "Wales, yet we cannot but admit the picture, is faith fully drawn, and true to the cop;^. The writer in comparing the energy and enter prise of the Victorians with the apathetic, easy-going, nerveless inhabitants of New South Wales, speaks in strong terms, and the censure coming from the proverbially, indolent Spaniard ought to be a severe re buke to a British colony. We extract the the following:— I "The people of New South Wales, as a corsequence of want of energy, confine their pursuits to well tea ten paths and it follows that most trades arc overdone. Sliopkeep ing and squatting absorb most of the capital. There are too many of the foraijer, and$ic interest and policy of the latter is destructive to all otK|§|en...
