THE PANAMA ROUTE. TJhe people of Maitland do not Seem to attach the iirJpDrtance to this matter of which it is so highly deserving. Ifc. may be thought that no immediate benefit would result to Maitland, and that therefore its inhabitants ajre. not called upon to makeShy special exertion ; but it is impossible to nfi'rrow down a public duty to such paltry bounds : it would be antagonistic to the liberal and enlightened spirit of the age to charge the people with apathy cih the score of such illiberal and benighted notions.
