~jlinndra & ,qRa ctandaljd PUBLISfIIED EVERY FRIDAY. NEC TEMERE NEC TIMIDE FRIDAY, AUGUST 20, 1909. L TnP. Federal Budget and the Premier's Conference in Melbourne may be said t to be so closely related to one another i that the one is dependent upon the other. The financial standing of the Connoonwaldth is one that very e materially atlects the states, and vice I versa. The present 1Ftederal Budget presented to Parliament by Sir John a Forrest on Thursday, the 12th lnst, is one that neither satisfies the people or the needs of the nation. In many directions of the utmost importance to Australia, no mention is made of the linancial provision for those problems. We may take, for instance, the failure to make provision for a Dreadnought or its equivalent. Furthermore, we I are told that the estimated deficit for the ensuing year will be £1,200,000, and this despite the increase over last year's resenuo of £200.000, derived mainly from the Post Ollice and the p-ofit from the ne...

Shire Elections. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 20 August 1909

Shire Elections. Five candidates have nominated forthe three vacancies caused through the re- b, tirement, by efflu?ion of time, of Crs 11 Lade, Findlay and Wightman. The last- F named has preferred to. take a rest and no doubt will offer his services at some G fnture time. Besides Messrs Lade and F?nnlay, three others are in the field, sir., Messrs Allen, Baker and Hayue. ai Mr Allen, who has had a lengthy term as al councillor in the Howqua shire, will sure to poll well. He is of the "go-a-head" o party, a very few of which exist. No doubt his acceptance as a councillor will n materially aid the adrancersent of the n shire generally for it must be admitted that while only a portion of the shire is liable to be rated in the event of a loss being oceasioned or. the railway, those out side will, to a certain extent, feel the I pinch. Mr Allen is using his best endeavors to divert the Jamieson and Wood's Point trattic, and is being seconded by the reasdents of the ranges, who are now ...

It may appear, to the gentlemen who compose the Conference. to be highly important to bilk thu public of the results of their deliberations, and no doubt it satisties their sense of personal dignity and importance to do so; but it is extremely doubtful whether the public at largo are interested enough in the results of their rather painful efforts to bestow a second thought upon them. Judging from the scheme that has been evolved to settle the' financial relations between the States and the Commonwealth we may well doubt the ability of the States representatives to finance a scheme worthy of the name.
