CITRUS CULTURE. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 1 April 1915

CITRUS CULTURE. The foregoing remarks apply particular ly to deciduous fruits. Citrus culture, which is being largely undertaken by set tlers, is quite a different proposition. Citrus fruit cannot be dried, neither does it lend itself to preservation except to a very limited extent in the form of jam. It must necessarily be marketed as fresh fruit, either locally or overseas. Many people look with doubt on the prospects of successfully marketing the huge quan tities of citrus fruits which will be pro duced on the Irrigation Areas in years to come, seeing that the -production of the State from the county of Cumberland and other established fruit-growing centres is already so large. Those who have given the question the greatest consideration, however, are firmly convinced that there is no great difficulty in the way of receiv ine an adequate return on the capital which any man may invest in citrus orchards on the Irrigation Areas. Such an authority as Mr. Elwood Mead has SDoken more ...

THE FLOWER GARDEN. (J.T.D.) [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 1 April 1915

THE FLOWER GARDEN. (J.T.D.) Now is the very best time to put in a few permanent trees, shrubs, and vines that is, evergreens-the deciduous plants should be put in later. Bear in mind the future size of the tree or shrub in regard to the space it is proposed it shall occupy. Do not plant trees overhanging the roofs of houses from which a drinking water supply is obtained, and do not set out too near fruit trees or vegetable or flower beds. The following evergreen trees do well in the west:--Pepper (Schinus molle), Kurraj ong, Silky Oak (Grevillea robusta), Cedrus Deodora, Eucalyptus (varieties), Pinus Insignis. Among shrubs suitable for western gar dening are Hibiscus (varieties), Oleander, Poinsettia, Bouvardia, Russellia, Juncea, Rhondeletia, Tecoma. Of vines the following are worthy of a place, either for covering unsightly build ings and fences or for forming shelter awnings to verandahs, etc.:-Dolicros, Bignonia, Mandevillea, Quisqualis, Bou ganvillea, Rhyncospernum. All are har...

A Day with an Instructor. [The system of agricultural instruction in vogue on the Irrigation Areas is unique as far as the State of New South Wales is concerned, and the following notes of a typical day's work are intended to con vey to readers of the special Show num ber of the " Record" an idea of how its system acts in daily practice.-Ed.] Arrangements were made to start at 8.30 a.m., the first call being at a block upon which a dairyman was just com mencing operations in a large way. Ar rangements had been made to meet him on the ground, but he had left the farm to transact some urgent business, conse quently a note had to be taken by the Instructor to visit this farm again on the following day. In the meantime, how ever, some instructions with regard to the location of the dairy cream store and other buildings were left with the settler's representative on the farm. This was a bad start, but it was really the only re buff met with all day, and in this case the trouble was appar...

CANNING DEMONSTRATION. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 15 April 1915

CANNING DEMONSTRATION. The canning demonstration, to which reference has been made in previous issues, was held on the afternoon of the 16th ultimo. Thirty-one visitors were pre sent, and although owing to the delay in connection with the instalment of ma chinery the work done was not as com prehensive as it was hoped it would be, a great deal of interesting information was given to the visitors. The methods of processing, including the washing and sterilising of fruit and pulp tins, boiling in open and closed pans and retorts, cap ping and tipping fruit cans, cooking in retort, cooling in tank, corking and cap suling bottles with machinesl, labelling tins, and other operations, were all ex plained. The demonstration did not ac tually conclude until about 5 p.m., when the last of the party left the factory. All expressed themselves surprised and pleas ed with what they had seen. SETTLERS AND THE LANDS ACTS. [Newspaper Article] — Irrigation Record — 15 April 1915

SETTLERS AND THE LANDS ACTS. Mr. L. J. Hagarty, Lands Office, Leeton, has kindly promised to contribute a series of short articles on various points in the Crown Lands Acts, regarding which, set tlers as a body appear to be considerably befogged. When the complicated nature of the land laws of the State in considered, it is not to be wondered at that a great deal of doubt exists in the mind of irri gationists as to the exact application of certain principles of the Lands Acts to their cases, and for this reason Mr. Hag arty's articles will be very welcome. It is hoped that a commencemnt will be made with these articles next issue.
