The estimated number of additional voters is four hundred thousand. The markets are deoressed. POST-OFFICE MYSTERIES. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 19 April 1866

POST-OFFICE MYSTERIES. -o One of the most curious things connected with the Post-office is the constant demand made upon the officials for the exercise of pa tience and ingenuity. No one would before hand, have expected such gross carelessnes on the part of the public as is now known to I be exhibited. The successive annual reports of the postmaster-general show in how many i different ways this carelessness makes itself felt. Sometimes there is inadvertency at the c post-office itself For instance on a particu. lar day in 1861, 500 bankers' parcels, con- i tainmg bills, notes, drafts, and other kinds of monetary paper, were not forthcoming at the proper hour ; the postman did not bring them, and Lombard street was in consternation. 1 Messages and telegrams were dispatched hither and thither without avail; when lo! the 500 packets were found safely reposing I in a basll et, which had inadvertently been pushed under a table out of sight in one of the rooms at St. Martin' le Grand. Ireland. THE FENIAN MOVEMENT. THE TRIALS. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 19 April 1866

THE YENIAN MOVEMENT. n ---o ci THE TRIALS. The following additional trials have taken p place before the Dublin special commission b since our last :- b John Fottrell, who was arrested in Man- a; chester, was put on his trial as a Fenian. ii The principal evidence against him was aF letter which he and a man named Patrick in Scally wrote to the "Irish People" office, in- ii troducing a pensioner named Pettit, who h was supposed to be a "friend of the cause," ii Pettit had no other intention from the be- 1 gining than to employ himself as an appro- p ver. He was hired in Manchester, and came l over as drill-instructor to the brotherhood. t He was told that the plan of the intended ii revolt was different from 184S--that all the officers and non commissioned officers were t all military men. There were (he was also fi inlormed) between 70,000 and 80,000 "stand a of rifles" in and around Dublin, and that ft every ship brought over men from America p belonging to the Fenians, vho scatte...

THE GRAND NATIONAL SPORTS. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 19 April 1866

TilE CTGRAND NXTfIONAL SPORTS. i - (From the "Herald.") The Grand National Sports Gathering,. in the Zoological Gardens, on Saturday, was not so well attended as was expected, con- i sidering the very attractive programmeu put " forth by the committee, only about 000 per sons being present. The great event of the or day-the mile race between Higgins and Hunter-did not come off, owing to the latter not putting in an appearance; but the Three Mile Race between Flood and Pardoc, the latter receiving eighty yards start, made amends in some degree for 1Hunter's absence.
