NEWS OF THE WEEK. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 19 December 1868

KJS',rS OF THE WEEK. If there are any who expect to derive sensational emotions from the revelations that Mr. Macleay's motion for a select committee to' investigate the documents on which Mr. Parkes founded his Ei'nmn mystery will elicit, we feel assured they will be disappointed. The author of the very mischievous ' canard ' has already been driven to make several f.-ital .-ulmL-.siotia, and has acknowledged that the 500 special constables he spoke of as in readiness tn protect Prince Alfred when he lauded never were appointed. It seems that it was upon docnm juts written or statements made by O'Farrell— who, it may be remem bered, showed considerable ingenuity in hoaxing his interrogators while in prison — and upon the utterly unreliable testimony of a wretched gaol-bird, convicted of numerous petty larcenies, and with half-a-dozen ' aliases,' that-Mr. Parkes came to the conclusion that a mysterious organisation of the Carbonari or Veluncgcriclit class, hostile to the British Roy...

TVUVT.. (nox oub oosnisitmiisyT.) Dwwibsr l&TH. — Under the head of news of the week I have no. alternative but to write: 'NiL' I remember once, when, making a long voyage, onr good ship was becalmed off the South . American coast. Our appetites grew fastidious, and the skipper was daily taxing the ingenuity of our steward tc produce a irenn bill of fare. ' I»et us have a change to-day steward,' was so oft repeated that that sable worthy was at his wits' onda how to obey the order, notwithstanding hia, prompt 'yes saar.' Ons day the dinuer; gong was sounded, the passengers drew round! the table, eager to discuBB the new faro, the captain lifted the cover before him, and behold, the dish was ' empty.' ADELONQ. , ._,- ., --ffnrott-oTOoaBB»fbnpitinv);' ? — December 23ed. — We have had a succession of hot days, hot winds, and clouds of dust since last I wrote, and the water has so decreased in our creek that Messrs. D. Wilson and Co., have been compelled to crush with only one stamp head, while at timea there was not enough even for that This is an unfortu nate affair for our miners, especially for those who depend upon the crushing to furnish Christmas cheer and to meet Christmas liabilities. Such a 'contretemps' will not occur again, as Messrs. Wilson and Co., anticipating a want of water and determined not to have their operations stopped on that account, have ordered a steam engine from Sydney, which is now on the road and will shortly arrive here. In future when water is scarce it will be employed to work the machine. ' On Friday evening Mr. Davies, of Goulburn, delivered a lecture in the Odd Fellows' Hall, subject, ' My Travels.' The large room was well filled, and those assem...
