I The English Ring . * [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 17 December 1853

I The English Ring . * From Bell s Life in London . Fight between Donnell y ami Gill for £ 20 a side . —Mr . Editor The fight came off this morning . ( Thursday , ) and we , as the backers of Donnelly , being dissatisfied with the termination , wish youi opinion as to whether the proceedings and finish were right or wrong . The facts are these ; Donnelly had the best of the fight nearly all through , and received little or no punishment , and , with the exception of a swollen lip , is without mark . Nobby Clarke , one of the seconders of Donnelly , twice threw up the sponge , without reason , or the consent of Donnelly . The second time the sponge was thrown up , Nobby Clarke crossed over to the referee and said that he would give in for Donnelly . Donnelly immediately replied to his other seconder , Jim Clarke , I will not give over , but fight on , when the other parties left the ring , leaving Donnell y and Jim Clarke in the ring from four to five minutes . The referee , ( Charle...

JACK RANDALL , ' [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 17 December 1853

JACK RANDALL , LIFE AND BATTLES OP m- DENOMINATED THI PRIME IRISH LA ® , OTHERWISE THE NONPAREIL . From a work published in England in 1818 , now flrst republished in this oountry in the columns of the New YORK CLIPPER . RANDALL , from his last victory over the cautious , scientific , and game Turner , was fully considered as having worked * his way to the top of the tree ; and it was also asserted , by many of the most experienced amateurs connected with the patronage of the Prize Ring , that the late phenomenon , Dutch Sam , in thebest ofhis days , must have yielded to the potent arm of the prime Irish lad . It is a positive fact , that Randall never received instructions from any pug ilist whatever : and it is owing to his natural mode of fighting that he has gained all his conquests . It is true , that Turner never decidedly took the lead in one round , but he appeared conspicuous in many of them ; and while Randall was fibbing his nob , he ; in turn , was endeavouring to knock ...

I ^ IGHEM ? BETWEEN BILL HAYES AND MCK JOKES OP P 0 BTS . M 0 L 3 P , For £ 200 a side . Frum Bell s Life Nov . 20 . This mill , which , as we stated in our last , has caused an extraordinary degree of excitement in fistic circlet , for some time past , came off on Tuesday last , in the . county of Cambridge , and , although the conclusion arrived at was not as satisfactory as could be desired , seeing that darkness put an end to the encounter before either man was anything like defeated , still , as the proceedings which took place on the following day , and which will be found detailed below , enabled the referee to give a decision which leaves no difficulty as to the disposition of the bets and battle-money , the match , unlike many others in which Hayes has been engaged , didnot end in a draw ; and as it was the first affair settled by the application of a new law , passed by the Pugilistic Association , the details possess an unusual amount of interest to our pugilistic readers...

PHILADELPHIA ITEM . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 17 December 1853

PHILADELPHIA ITEM . OBEAT ATTACHMENT OV A DOO TO HIS MASTER . » A short time ago , one- of our most worthy citizens died ; he had nearly numbered his three score and ten . The old gentleman was fond of taking his afternoon walk when ihe day was fine , and was often seen in the neighborhood of the Philadelphia Exchange , always attended by his faithful dog . Spot was a white shaggy Scotch terrier of me4 jum size , and had a dark spot on his back , from which te was named ; he was not only remarkable for his attachment to his master , but also as a ratter , and possessing uncommon sagacity . The old gentlemans illness was of short duration , dnring which time Spot took to his kennell in the yard , which commanded a view of his master s chamber windows ; it was with difficulty that the family could induce him to take food , or lose sight of hi . master s room ; up to this period he was sprightly , killed one or more rats nearly every day , and it could not be discovered up to the day h...
