gtanltfgt §)»«! Light BrahmaB . EDITOBS WESTEBN BOB AT .: —I fre quently reoeive inquiries from parties wishing to know the valuable characteristics of this breed of fowls . Of oonrse I am not presuming that the Light Brahma is the fowl par excellence when I say it ia one of the most valuable of chickens . Aa THE RUBAI is read by hundreds of farmers who want to keep chickens on the farm , and who want a breed that embraces enongh good qualities to make it a valuable general purpose fowl , in the Light Brahma they have more of them , I believe , than in any other bird excepting one , and that is the Plymouth Book ; but of it I will speak at another time . First , Light Brahmas are the most beautiful chickens in existence . I say this without fears of successful contradiction . There is no prettier sight than a green meadow in the Spring on whioh roam a hundred Light Brahmas . Their black necks and tails , and their white bodies , contrast most beautifully with the green sward on whio...

ftaraijrap li ^ —Between the Mahdi in Africa and the Pahdi in Ireland , England has a hard row of stamps . — This milk is rather warm for suoh a cold morning , said n . customer , the other day to a milk boy . Yes , father pnt hot water in it , instead of oold , to keep it . from freezing , was the simple and truthful rep y—A lady in Ooaey town discovered a mouse in the family flour barrel . She summoned her husband and told him to get ai gun and call the dog and station himself near . the scene of onslaught . Getting- up on a highchair she commenced punching the flour barrel with a pole . The poor mouse soon made its appearance and started across the floor , the dog immediately in pursuit . In the excitement the man fired the gun , killing the dog , andthe lady fainted and fell off the chair . j ^ -griciilter Hard Times Again . j . T z EDITOBS WESTEBN BUBAI ,: —Is not the question of hard times a relative question ? When it is hard times for one class of individuals , may it not be good times for another olasafo In December last I wished to borrow fifty dollars for a short time , and went to all the men in the oity of Monroe that were engaged in loaning money for a business , but not a dollar eould be had ; and suoh a tale of distress , and with suoh doleful countenances as they [ depicted the horrors of the coming Winter was enough to make the hair stand on one s head . They all told the same story and in the same horrid tone . Well , ! confess it soared me a little , fori was building . Now my theory , from my present standpoint , is , these men were laying a foundation for a higher rate of interest . If times are really hard , it is no use to talk about it unless one can give the true cause or causes , and prescribe a remedy . It is teasonably presumable that a univers...

^ tfrifcnUnral The Apple . EDITOBS WESTEBN BUBAL : —I propose to tell you some reasons why yon dont and how you oan . Why is it that we oant raise apples just as we could twenty or thirty years ago ? This is , perhaps , a question of very vital importance in Brown county , and we might say all ovei the States , and being the faot , we propose to deal with the causes accordingly . Thete aie vaiious reasons why . In the first place we have not got the forests and tall prairie grass to equalize onr temperature ; it gets colder now than it did thirty , forty , or fifty years ago , that is , onr main temperature is subject to greater changes . Why this ? Aa we have above stated we have not the forest and tall grass for protection against wind , heat and cold , the earth is not kept at even warmth with covering , the wind is not checked with forestry , bnt to-day our lands are largely in what we oall a high state of cultivation , shorn of nature s covering . Well , what is the result ? Th...

$ M * nti || fc [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and American Stockman — 18 April 1885

$ M * nti || fc Chess . EDITOBS WESTEBN BUBAL : —The question now uppermost in the minds of farmers and handlers of wheat seems to be the ultimate origin of chess , Bromus secalinus . Some able writers claim that the plant , if left to itself , wiU eventually turn into wheat . M . Tahre has declared that to his positive knowledge JEgiVops triticordis has been known to turn into wheat by cultivation ; subsequent investigation , however , shows that it was a true hybrid front another plant—- . Egilops ovata—fertilized by wheat , and that its hybridity was absorbed by the stronger parent , or- perchance , the stronger plant , wheat , was the fittest , hence , survived , the weaker being killed out . From the standpoint of the botanist it will be observed that these two plants be long to different species , and are of different genera ; then , in accordance with the fundamental laws of nature they oonld not mix or cross , inasmuch as species are distinct and are created so , therefore ,...
