SCIENCE AND ART . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 October 1878

SCIENCE AND ART . DAMASCUS BLADES . . ^ HHlHILE NOTICING OUR GUNS in the artillery-room - Sir ^ en P assm & through the drill hall , the fine appearance of the new rifles in the racks , with accoutrements all in order , there was suggested to our mind the source from which these improvements came , and the readiness with which the Government recognizes a disposition to act in the spirit of the law under which our institution was founded . While these suggestions were yet in our mind we turned to the catalogue and noted that the Trustees have the power to provide such requisite apparatus as may be required to teach in a thorough manner , such branches of learning as are related to military tactics , without excluding other scientific and classical studies . —Act of General Assembly , 1867 , sec . 7 . Just then we reached the east end of the drill-room , and stopped before the rack containing our national colors , and the side-arms provided for the officers of the Battalio...

THE ILLINOIS AND ST- LOUIS BRIDGE- [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 October 1878

THE ILLINOIS AND ST- LOUIS BRIDGE- f 4 lll HE PRINCIPAL object of interest to the traveler , when if § P § ° n S mto ^ t- Louis from the east , is the magnificent Illinois and St . Louis bridge . On first viewing it , one is struck with its massiveness ; but observation will soon show that it agrees well , in architectural effect , with its surroundinas ; the masssiveness of the buildings of St . Louis showing at once a characteristic of the German element of its population . After the talking , usual on such occasions , a company was formed . The first caisson was towed from Carondelet on the morning of October ioth , 1 S 6 9 . It was placed 500 feet from the Illinois shore . The caissons , which supplied the means of securing the piers upon the rock-bed of the river , were formed massively of iron , with air-chambers underneath nine feet in height , and from which the water was excluded completely by compressed air , forced into them b y means of air pumps . Sand pumps were used f...

CORRESPONDENCE . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 October 1878

CORRESPONDENCE . ^ So OLD FRIENDS : —On the 14 th August I sailed HP fr ° m ^* Y . on board the steamer France ; and after twelve days of rolling and tossing on the briny deep , landed at Havre . It was Sunday morning but no one could have told it by the apearance in the city . All was bustle and stir . Museums , stores and shops were all open , and every tradesman and laborer , busy at his work . It seemed as though the French had some time in the past been dreaming over their wine bottles , and had forgotten which day was Sunday , when of course they had recourse to one ot two things , either to make all days Sabbaths or all days working days ; so after considering the matter carefully they concluded that it would be more equitable to cheat the Lord out of one day a week than themselves out of six and immediately proceeded to their tasks . After visiting the museum at Havre , which , by the way , is an ordinary one scarcely worthy of mention , the boys , for there were several of ...

HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHY . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 October 1878

HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHY . IN THE CAPITOL-WASHINGTON . wlol ^ mto tl at temple of Liberty and see if you are not proud . EnC 1 ^^ rer those sacred halls which once echoed to the tread of stately giants , and where the Past and Present greet each other . Mark well those garnished walls , which listened and answered to inspiring words , and from whose later historic vistas , look forth a truer answer of grand faces and great deeds . May not your pride be pardoned ? Is it not elevating to claim such kindred ? . Surely it ought to be ; for here are men who walked with God , upon high places : and they have thrown back light upon the way . We know them , for they are not many . And yet they are of that little flock to whom it was said , Fear not , and of whom it might well be said that it has pleased the Father to give them the kingdom—the kingdom that is forever . Their laurels shall not wither , for they are watered by the offerings of men s hearts . Their lives shall not be tarnished , f...

EDUCATIONAL . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 October 1878

EDUCATIONAL . DRAWING IN THE COMMON SCHOOLS . wiMP ¦^ WRONG ; all wrong . Of course we don t ^ mean the ^ $ W & s study of drawing in the school , but the method in which it is now taught in the academies and high schools of nearly every town . We know we lay ourselves liable to the charge of too much self-assur-ance in thus rudely r assailing a system already so popular in this country ; a system taught every day in the schools of these two towns , in their summer Normal , and until recently in this Institution . But knowing , as we do , its injurious effects , this very fact of its rapid adoption and fast increasing power should induce all lovers of Art , however feeble or inexperienced , to prove their patriotism by denouncing it at once . It is not enough that America s artists smile in contempt , —the evil is greater than is imagined . Foreign critics see the representatives of the craft whom our country sends to their shores ; they observe their patience and dilige...

The article LAllegroand II Penseroso , is worthy of care- ? - || , ^ ful reading ; showing on the part of the writer a clear insight into the source and merits of the poems .
