The Hog of the Future . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 December 1910

The Hog of the Future . It does not require a prophet , or a son of a prophet , to tell what the hog of the future is to be . The trend of breeders tastes , and the demands of the consumers in all parts of the world , point in one direction toward the hog that produces the most meat for the feed consumed , and the least waste in inferior cuts of what Is produced . To our forefathers such a hcg would have been considered an imaginary one , or an ideal that could not be relaized . But we are approching it at such a rapid pace that we can almost see it at the present time . The hog situation of the whole worlu is becoming an interesting one , and it is worth the while to consider it . In 1850 when the population of the world was close to one billion people pork meats were used only to a limited extent outside the United States and Great Britain . Then the popular pork meat was mess pork made ot the heavy backs and sides of the slow growing hogs that required two years to raise and fit ...

Prevention of Disease . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 December 1910

Prevention of Disease . ( By George M . Rommel , B . S . A . ) In dealing with the diseases of hogs , preventive measures must be most relied upon . The animals must be given dry and well-ventilated quarters , which must be kept clean . Contrary to common belief , hogs have some habits which raise them above other domestic animals from the standpoint of cleanliness . For example , unless compelled to do so , a hog will not sleep in its own filth . Ifjpart of the floor of the pen is raised and kept well bedded with straw , while the rest is not , all excrement will be left on the unbedded portion of the floor , and the bed itself will be always clean . In addition to cleanliness , close attention should be given to the feed which Is supplied , that nothing may be fed which will convey the germs of disease , especially tuberculosis , to the herd . If the hogs are fed milk in any form obtained from cows kept upon the same farm , the cows should be subjected to the tuberculine test , as...

From An Old Breeder [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 December 1910

From An Old Breeder BY GEO . W . BERRY , TOPEKA , KAN Country Cured Meat . The Ham What Am . Why many farmers do not dress their own meats oil the farm for home use is a difficult question to answer . That the quality of country hams and sausage excells packing house products is generally conceded . The man of today has grateful recollection of the nut-brown smoked hams that were cured in father s particular way . None since have seemed of the exact appetizing flavor of those he hung in rows in the old smoke house and smoked with green hickory to a natural hrown . That every farmer can successfully cure the hams and bacon of hogs butchered on the farm is so reasonable that this phase of the question scarcely needs discussion . Our fathers , for reason of domestic economy as , well as necessity , butchered their hogs and beeves and cured all the meats for family use , and many of them sold their surplus products to the store keeper . The art of curing meat on the farm is so simple th...

UNKNOWN [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 December 1910

Dry Corn in the Silo . A subscriber from Nebraska writes that it was impossible tor him to get his silo built in timet to fill it with green corn , and he wants to know if it will be of any advantage to cut the shocked corn and store it in the silo . This has been done by some men with a degree of success . It has the advantage that by virtue of the fact that if the silo is full it Will stand better than if it were to remain empty for a year . On the other hand , silage made from shocked corn will lack the succulence which is one of the most important factors in the value of this feed . The process of ripening dries the sap from the plant and turns the stalk into a woody fiber that is not easily digested , that does not have any succulence and does not yield readily to fermentation in the silo . If one were to fill his silo on a warm day so that it would be possible to use water very liberally , there is a chance that he might break down this woody fiber and by soaking and thoroughl...
