JEROME AND HUMMELL. During the progress of the Thaw case District Attorney Jerome, in many in stances, could not refrain from exhibit ing his personal malignity against the prisoner and his wife, Evelyn Neshitt Thaw. His conduct has been more of a persecution than a prosecution. His ex amination of Thaw's wife was simply scandalous. Jerome's motive is plain. Stanford White was his friend and he would be his avenger, but the climax was ireached when Jerome called Abe Hummell to the stand to discredit the statement of Evelyn Nesbitt Thaw which is familiar to readers of newspapers throughout the world. SALARIES OF OFFICIALS. We do not favor low salaries for pub lic officers. We favor fair and just com -pensation for all public service.
