THE ARIZONA WEBKDY"' JOURNAL-MlSlR, IN THE SOUTH DURING THE WAR. Trials That Beset Many a Family Wkleh Had to Cat ami He Clothed. To most people Virginia cooking has been a synonym fxjr a delight fully prepared meaL And no doubt this universal opinion is & correct one. But Virginia cooking, when there wasn't anything to cook, is quite a different matter from what it k with a pantry to which the whole country supplies every delicacy in and out of season. Thoso upon whom devolved the caro of the larder during the days of the civil war tell a pitiful but ludi crous tale of the straits to which diro want and necessity often reduced them. The country was of course then torn up by excitement, and the marching troops' foraging kept it pretty well clear of everything in the edible lino. Of course the north em soldiers appropriated all they could got for themselves and their horses, and the southerners expected nothing but liberality at the hands of those for whom they fought Oc casional...
