U) Site gattjj iorian. ASTORIA, OREGON: SUNDAY. ...FEnUl'AKY 22.1SS5 TO BE BLAMED. Tnn failure of the legislature to elect a senator is a matter of -deep regret to all -who have tbe welfare'of our stale at heart, irrespective of party. It is plainly evident that tbe one tiling which is above all others in importance, in this voting for a Benator, is that some able man be elected that the place bo filled that people of this state have all the senatorial representation to which they are entitled so that the import ant improvements so necessary to the commercial prosperity of our state bo not delayed for want of in fluence in securing needed goveru mental aid. It is humiliating to se our legislators when good judgement should govern their actions, yield to a factional spirit that overrides all considerations of public good. No citizen, be be Republican or Demo crat, can find cause for gratulation in circumstances that deprive our state of important strength in national de liberations. ...

(?) She nttjj gtsiovuut. ASTORIA, OREGON: TUESDAY. .FEIIUI'AKY 21,1683 A POST-MORTEM EXAMINATION. The determined refusal of. the Re publicans last Friday to elect a sena tor is a inattor that occasions regret to every member of the party except a few pig-boadod men who were en trusted with that duty by mistaken constituencies. Excuses and rea sons are plenty. We have heard more thau onough to convince us that low malice and puerile jealousy wore the sole motives that promptod the idiotic separation of the legislature without performing the duties ...

W i lw gaity ltorimu ASTORIA, OREGON: THURSDAY.- FEBRUARY 2C. 1885 PAST AXD PItESENT. Next "Wednesday the Republican party goes out of power, and a Demo cratic president will be inaugurated. In any oilier nation, the relinquishing of possession by a political party of the reins of government after twenty four years of uninterrupted occupa tion would raise a tumult. But great though the change may be, the occurrence will have no more signifi cance than any other prominent event of the year. Everything will go right along as before. The Democratic newspapers, will, however, find it novel to defend the administration, for, for neaily a quarter of a century they have been pitching into the way that imtioiml :lFtirs were adminis torod. In thosrfine manner the Re publican ncH-fcprtjiers will find them selves no loiiser in the position of advocates, apologist, or defenders, and instead of endorsing they will decry and with hostility inveigh against the acu of the chief execu tive. cv he gaily flsfodaw. ASTORIA, OREGON: FRIDAY FEBRUARY 27, 1SS5 LAXD FORFEITURE. There lias been a great deal of surprise expressed at the promptness of the senate in voting on the Texas Pacific forfeiture. The expectation was that no vote would be reached this session. The house has passed bills for forfeiting over 50,000,000 acres of laud, but only one o these bills, the Oregon Central, has become a law. The house started in at the beginning of the Forty-eigth congress with a determination to forfeit all the unearned lauds held by railroad cor porations. The public lands commit tee reported bills to the house for forfeiting over 100,000,000 acres. Their consideration wns pressed up on tho house, and lulls were passed last session declaring forfeiled seven small southern grants, amouuting in all to about 6,000,000 acres; the Tex as Pacific, 15,000,000; tho Oregon Central, 4,000,000; Ibe California and Oregon, 3,000,000, and the Atlantic and Pacific. 35,000,000 acres.
