HOTH pOIiOjW PROGRESS. 7r Lite of ike Land is Established in Righicojtsntss. HONOLULU. DEC. 5. 1894 They Breathe Again. There has been a figurative suspension of respiration on the part of a large group of onr patri ots. It was caused by the an nouncement that Mr. Patrick Crowley, San Francisco's Chief of Police bad arrived in Honolulu, intent upon securing the home ward coiapanj' of some of the numerous thieves, embezzlers, defaulters and micellaneous crooks who have left the coast for prudential reasons, and drif ed upon this beach. These ac cretions to our population have been unusually numerous since the birth of the late demented, but strictly holy and virtuous P. G., and, a fact most qneer we'll mention here, this arm- of crooks whether of earlier or later arriv al, are almost to a man enlisted as the virtuous supporters of this most virtuous republic. The self willed gentlemen referred to hold offices under the only immaculate government on earth, at least so far as the suppl...

PROGRESS. kc Life of the Land is Established in Rizltfeeusncss. HONOLULU, DEC. G, ABETTING. According to the Advertiser Daputy Collector McStocker has been endeavoring to sell on be half of this virtuous republic about $50,000 worth of opium. Ho failed, we are told. But, may we ask our virtuous rulers, if the attempt to sell opium abroad, is a very nice trafic for such a Christian gov ernment to be in ? Opium is contraband because it is considered a noxious drug. "Wo protect by laws our fellow citizens from the use of it, and at one time opium smughng was punished equal to manslaughter. With the fine spirit of human ity which distinguishes Messrs. Smith & Co., these immaculate gentlemen do not attempt to de stroj' the alleged injurious drug, but through their agent they try to palm it off on a friendly and neighborly community. For sooth! The virtue of the republic u most olastic. If a big gang of counterfeiters was caught here and a largo a inount of greenbacks secured the gove...

A few nights ago a native uamod JSrabalo was most cruelly assaulted, and beaten by certain police officers who have been fur nished with n brief authority from the men in the pay of the taxpaj'ors. The Advertiser, tho official or cran of the Hawaiian Eepublic made a very fine exhibition of indignation and criticized tho of ficers in a determined and even harsh manner. The commander of the array who was present at the time of the row made all necessary complaints to the govoruinent, and tho offenders will undoubtedly in due time bo discharged. But why stop at this instance? "Why cork up the virtuous in dignation' and allow tho kanakas to bo "thumped" in the future? H7JW7III POMIiKI PROGRESS. 7 he Ujc of the Land is Established in Righteousness. HONOLULU. DEC. 8. 1S94 IN DANGER. The "Advertiser " After Satan. "When rogues fall out honest men get their dues !" That is highly comforting for the honest men of the day, be cause there has been a serious split between the Advertiser and "old nick." The heroic editor of the morning paper, who is look ing for a new pastor for the pet church of the pharisees has got it "down" on Mr. Thurston's partnor, and unfolds a glowing picture of what will bo the fate of the ruler of Hades, if ho puts his nose within the sacred precints of the Central Union. The valiant editor writes as follows In the old pulpits, tho preach ers fired dogmas, and paper pal lets ut Satan. In the now pulpits, the preacher will plant and un limbor his guns, and fire solid shot into that old fiend, and after ho has crippled him, jump out of tho pulpit, and head a charge on him, with his congregation, in trained ranks behind him. Wo bog...

PROGRESS. Ike Life d ike Land is Esiabliskea in Rizklcousncss. HONOLULU. DEC. 10. 1S01 ANOTHER CONSPIRACY UN EARTHED. FOUR MEN BEHIND BARS. THE The Republicans Breathe Again. Hawaii seems to bo blessed with a specimen of conspiracies unknown in any other part of the world. Occasionally the argus eyed watchers of the government become very active. They are around day and night. They are seen in mysterious conversations with the most remarkable people, and they assume a troubled mien of importance and responsibility which is tragic comical to be hold. And then the initiated know ihnt there is a conspiracy on foot and that men with evil designs are plotting to overthrow the gov ernment, and establish themselves as rulers and "shareholders" in the treasury. Heretofore these conspiracies have turned out to bo extremely insipid affairs and the conspira tors arrested most insignificant or peaceful citizens. Tho Wilcox conspiracy of 1S89 was the only one which deserves tho namo. And ovon in...
